One of my best friends just had her 2nd daughter. The Baptism already came and went, but I didn't have the a chance to get a gift. I really want to get them something nice as the mother is my confident and cohert in crime  . But I'm totally stumped for a gift. This is their 2nd daughter so they already have most things. They aren't the type of people who love brand names so wouldn't really care for something like a Tiffany Silver Baby Spoon. They are very practical, but enjoy the unqiue. Any ideas?

Gosh, no idea, but I'm so glad you started this thread - I'm going to my friend's son's baptism this weekend and desperately need ideas!

If you share the same faith, a religious-themed present is appropriate (rosary or cross or children's religious storybook) as a baptism gift. Baptisms are also naming ceremonies, so an engraved picture frame or keepsake book are good choices. Money gifts are also traditional. And, if you are not the named godparent or very close to the family, a card alone is perfectly appropriate.

We got a lot of savings bonds for our son's

Hi,

Money is an appropriate gift for the child. I prefer savings bonds because its less of a temptation to cash them in. Supposedly, its for the childs education fund. Do they still do savings bonds?. A 50.00 dollar bond used to cost 37.00. As the bond ages its value increases to the 50.00. They have charts on this stuff to tell you haow long you have to hold the bond.

I think these were the off shoot of War bonds that the Gov't used to help finance the war. They were very popular even when I was a child. I received lots of bonds for my birthday, confirmation and of course birth.

A small cross pendant or a gold or silver bracelet with the baby's name are very popular in my country! We also offer nice clothes or a pair of fancy shoes for the baby!
Another idea is a silver frame for a baby's picture, with designs appropriate for the baby's room or a photo album, made of velvet, with silver accents in colors like pink or blue.
Also, i attach a pic of a pin that we also offer very often...It's supposed to keep the bad eye away from the baby!

Our daughter was just baptized, and we received Money gifts, nice picture frames, rosary, and a Bible.

Our son was just baptized too. We received mostly cash gifts (anywhere from $25-100), one cross to hang in his bedroom and one children's book. There are also some pretty cute personalized gifts on etsy if you search baptism gift.

Thanks! Found tons of stuff on ETSY that is adorable. When we ended up getting a scrapbook made to order for her first year. Her mom just has to print out pictures and add them!

Typical baptism gifts for friends and family usually run to either the sentimental or useful- money for-the-baby.
I leave handmade gifts, heirlooms, utensils & jewelry to family members. Money is surprisingly welcoming. Baptisms are proper times to think of the baby's future, many well-wishers choose to present cash & checks in baptismal cards. If the parents haven't started a baby's education fund, this is the best opportunity to start one.

Interesting thread! I have never heard of monetary gifts for a baptism ever! Only close family and friends would come to an infant baptism, and even then, gifts are not required. But I have given nieces little cross pendants or Bible story books and that type of thing.

I think you made a great choice, Sarah! My daughter makes photo books of her baby all the time!

I always give a beautiful wooden Noah's Arc toy. My boys love ours and I like that it has a religious context but is enjoyed by their friends no matter their faith.

It's probably regional. I've always given money and my kids had money given to them in beautiful cards or rosary keepsake boxes. :saint:

My son was baptised last Sunday. We received cash gifts for him; anything ranging from 200 pounds from close family, to 40 pounds from more distant relatives/friends. Gifts used to be common at baptisms where I'm from up until 10 years ago but now it's cash because people want to help with the child's education fund.

I always give Noah's Ark Banks with the first $ inside. For family members, I buy larger/intricate banks, have them monogramed, dated and add a larger amount inside.
