hello everyone

its been a while since ive posted...blame it on school and everything. i am just curious which time would be best to purchase a diamond; before christmas (oct-dec) or jan-mar? i plan on proposing in about april or may of next year but that can be pushed to june if necessary. i am currently looking for a lovely princess diamond to give her but i have the lovely opportunity not to rush this purchase. i read somewhere in a past post that christmas time is good because there are "more" diamonds cut or something because people want to purchase for christmas. some people say diamonds go a little cheaper in the beginning months of the year because there is little of any consumer purchasing during that time period. so if anyone has knowledge of such, i would appreciate the chime in!

ps
ive noticed there are some new icons to put in the post as well!!! kudos to that

Buy the diamond when you see the one you want because prices are on the rise and have been consistently since the last quarter of 2003 as has been discussed in great detail on several threads here on PS over the past few months which we know you haven't been privy to since you have indicated that you haven't been on PS for awhile. Basically the DTC (DeBeers Diamond Trading Co.) has increased the price of diamond rough approx. 21% over the past few months and they've never decreased the price of rough after increasing it so you can only expect to pay more for the same diamond as time passes - it seems to us that the DTC is in catch-up mode after not taking their usual price increases in the years directly following the events of 9/11.

In our experience, diamond prices are essentially the same throughout the year on an internet level. Individual retailers might have holiday sales and year end inventory clearance sales and beginning of the year kick-off sales, but all of those sales are imposed upon false mark-ups so the prices are really not any different than they would be any other time of year... But diamond prices as a whole tend to increase routinely over time and have done so for the past two hundred years, so again, our recommendation is to buy the diamond when you find what you are looking for if it works with your timing and your pocketbook.

I concur with Robin & Todd. We were not ready to purchase until recently but I started looking around in the beginning of the year and, yup, the prices had been rising and recently they have risen at an even faster pace. So, when you find THE STONE don't wait, order it. Best of luck.

thanks for the replies!

I did go back and read the past postings on the rising prices, quite informative I must say, yet scary for that med student pocketbook!! Anyway, I'll keep looking hopefully I can snag one sometime between nov and jan. oh and one more thing...due to the increased sales in dec are there more diamonds available for purchasing?
