Armed police seal off town in hunt for Tyneside gunman

Savage describes the atmosphere in Rothbury as "eerily quiet", as people are told to stay indoors.

Marksmen are searching empty buildings, woods and fields in and around a town in north-east England in the hunt for suspected gunman Raoul Moat.

People had been told to stay indoors amid fears that the former bouncer fled on foot after abandoning his car in Rothbury, Northumberland.

Residents are now being allowed to cross the cordon around the town.

However, police believe he is still in the area and are advising people to remain indoors.

The 37-year-old has been on the run since allegedly shooting three people, one fatally, over the weekend.

It has also been revealed that two men taken hostage by him have been found and arrested for conspiracy to murder.

An exclusion zone was in force for much of Tuesday, with dozens of armed officers drafted in from neighbouring forces and police searching all vehicles leaving the town.

A school in nearby Longhorsley was turned into a temporary rest centre for stranded residents.

They are now being allowed to return to their homes, though road blocks remain in place, with armed officers carrying out checks.

People in the north of the town have been allowed to walk to collect their children from school.

In the south of the town movement is still not allowed, but people could drive on the B6341 to collect children.

Ch Supt Mark Dennett, area commander for Northumberland, said: "This is a fast-moving and dynamic situation.

"Members of the public are advised to remain indoors and await further instructions.

"Also anyone visiting Rothbury is advised not to travel at this stage.

"Raoul Thomas Moat is still potentially at large and we are undertaking a search in what is a significant and challenging geographic area and it may take several hours.

He added: "I want to thank the people of Rothbury for their support and patience and ask for their continued co-operation and understanding at this difficult time."
