I recently purchased an engagement ring. I bought the diamond and then had it mounted. The diamond was exactly what I was looking for. After the mounting when you look closely at the ring directly from the top it seems that you can see a reflection of the setting. Is this standard? Any help would be great. When you look at it from a distance you obviously can''t tell. Also, I am still within the return time period and just want to feel better. Thanks!

What shape diamond? How is it set? Where is this "reflection" located? Did you buy a thin stone that one can see right through? Do you have the specs on the stone?

Best yet, do you have a photo of the ring with the reflection in view?

It is a round shape in a setting with two trillions on either side. The reflection is below the table when you look directly into the top of the diamond. A gray colored circle. The stone is H, VS-2. I don't have the exact specs with me but, it wasn't Ideal cut but, just below (Premium). No, it wasn't too thin/thick. I don't have an issue with the stone. Just the setting. I don't have a picture readily available. Thansk for your help.

Possibly some effect from the trillion or the metal of the setting is being seen now in the crwon of the diamond. In a well cut stone, such as yours, very lttle has this effect so I am at a loss. When viewed from the side you may see unfamiliar lines in a diamond that has been set, but not generally from the top facing view....

I believe it is the setting metal. I have attached a rough pic. that I put together. The think lines are the setting. On the right the thick circle is what I see looking straight down into the diamond. I appreciate your help. Should I look at getting a new setting?

I don't like what I see in the drawing. If metal from the setting is touching your diamond, it could be that. It should not be anything but a contact zone. If nothing is touching, then someone expert needs to examine the ring.

kellyk,

Make sure your stone is clean. From the location of your picture, this could be a reflection of debris stuck to the girdle. If it was a reflection of the prongs, it wouldn't be a circle. As David pointed out, this is not a typical effect.

Hi Kelly. You might be seeing a facet pattern reflection. Does it look similar to either of the patterns circled below?

Neil, it's nice to have you aboard. How's things out there in Denver?
