Thanks to the vast amount of information I found here on Pricescope, I finally picked up a diamond I fell immediately in love with for my future fiance. I purchased it for 8k from Whiteflash, and while it''s an extraordinary diamond, I still could not believe the appraiser estimated the value at 13k!!

While this may seem like a great thing to many people, I was happy for only a split second. This value will greatly affect the insurance that I purchase for it. The cost of the insurance jumped 20% because of the appraisal.. I don''t necessarily agree with the stated value, as I can easily replace the diamond with a similar one for the same price that I paid for it. I don''t blame this on the appraiser, as the bottom of the sheet clearly marks the value to be from a "high value" retail establishment.

I am going to get the diamond set in the next week, and the insurance company is going to want an appraisal with the diamond set. Would it be possible to get a "non-inflated" appraisal from anyone in the Bay Area? I realize all appraisers are independent, so they will not simply write in whatever number I tell them to, but I''d rather have the appraisal take into account online/wholesale values instead of numbers you would get from a Shane Co., or a Zales.

You have to tell them where it is bought. They appraised it based on the area you are from, if they know it is bought online, they will probably reassess the price of the piece.

The ring I purchased appraised for ~$8-10k more then I paid for and this was including that it was purchased "online."

I believe you can submit your receipt of purchase to the insurer and ask for it to be insured for that amount.

Rather than pay for another appraisal, just ask the original appraiser to revise the appraisal for a low retail internet value.
