Hello,
I am looking for an engagement ring. My mom would like to pass her ring onto me since my dad has passed away. The problem is the diamond is marquise cut and my girlfriend really dislikes this cut. It is .75 carat. I was wondering if it would be possible without being extremely expensive to cut the diamond up into smaller ones to wrap the band with (sorry don't know what it is called). I would like to use my moms ring some how but also get my girlfriend a ring she likes.

Thanks for any help
Tom

Of course it is physically possible.
The question is will the size of the resulting diamond(s) justify (in YOUR mind) the price paid for the recutting job.

I've heard of marquise being cut down into pears.
In fact I read somewhere that marquise are SO out of style now, and therefore inexpensive to buy on the used market, that some people claim they can turn a profit buying them and cutting them into pears.

At 350 minimum for a recut and the resulting weight loss. Not thinking it's worthwhile at all.

Even if she doesn't like it for an e-ring, maybe you could have it made into a pendant (since she won't have to see it so much!) to give her on your wedding day (oh, wait, I see that Gypsy said this).

To some people sentimental value can sometimes trump what makes financial sense.

I know a guy who rebuilds pianos.
Almost all his work is on very old Steinway, Mason and Hamlin or Chickering grands he picks up very cheaply, rebuilds, and sells for over $30,000, often over $60,000.

Uprights, even Steinways, almost never make financial sense to rebuild.

When a client finds out their old upright will be worth much less than the $15,000 rebuilding job 99% of the time they just sell or donate it or send it to the landfill.

Occasionally someone will inherit dear old grandma's cherished no-name upright piano and spend the $15,000 anyway.
This rebuilder makes such customers sign a contract stating they were informed the rebuilt piano will be worth much less than the cost of the rebuild.
He does this to protect himself from being sued by family members who did not share the sentimental attachment to the piano.

To put it bluntly in my own opinion? Sooooo not worth it. Keep it intact in case you'll find a use for it one day and get your girlfriend the ring she wants.

A great thing to do with a marquise diamond of that size is to use it in a clasp for a strand of pearls. Those can be a very welcomed accessory for a traditional wedding and the diamond will play a part that will add to the necklace in appearance, but not in a way that would disturb the wearer as it will noirmally be on the back of the neck and not out in front. It might be a great way to use the family jewel in a way that is acceptable.

I guess I will leave the ring as is and maybe use it later on for something. Thanks for all the help.
