Following on from Selkies "the photo you wish wasn''t there" thread, what tips do people have on posing for photographs so that you look your best?

Are there books on this?

I know a lot of pro photographers know how to ''arrange'' you, but they are handy hints in general!

Heh, I looked for tips on this a while ago. Here''s one list: Look thin in photos. And here''s another: Pose like Princess Di. She mastered that head tilt/look upward thing, for sure.

Arching your neck slightly forward and tilting your chin a bit down helps get rid of the dreaded extra chin shadow that even thin people get sometimes. Another tip I''ve heard is when smiling, don''t grin so widely that your top teeth completely show.

Always do the dancer''s pose if you can: hips angled to the camera, fron foot pointing forward, back foot pointing out, shoulders back and relaxed, chest out, chin up, head slightly tilted. Take a breath before the pic is taken to relax your face so you don''t have the ''deer in the headlights'' look.

Those are great ideas, ladies!

I take icky pictures, so I am definitely using some of these tips!

Thanks so much for sharing!

Invite a friend over (someone you trust who won''t be overly critical but constructive anyway), and have her/him take some pics of you beforehand. Check out what you do or don''t like about your poses and try different things, get comfortable with being in front of the camera. If you have a great photographer, he/she will be able to pose you in a way that''s more flattering...but also be mindful of hands and feet, little things like those can make a big difference in whether you appear graceful or poised in photographs. Have a glass of wine or meditate or do whatever tends to relax you before the actual photo shoot, in other words, loosen up a bit before you pose and have it captured on film forever, hee hee.
