I was just wondering how many of you would use a chat on here to talk with the other members. I know I would love to, it would seem like more of a personal connection. Just curious. I know this probably isn''t the right section to post this in, but it seems to me to be the most read so I did it anyways. Feel free to move it Leonid.

One more avenue for strange 'diamond smuggling' questions? No way!

If I want to chat with someone, I use Yahoo, AOL, MSN etc.

I think the PM function works pretty well for a quickie convo, or an email if you don't have them on one of the messenger services.

i'm just curious.

voters - explanations are welcome :-)

I would have to vote no, just due to the fact that with current system many people can still be in on a 'conversation', but you don't run into quite the 'overusage' that real-time chat often encourages. The witticisms put forth here are nice interjections into a thread, but real-time chat often goes the way of just banal chatter.

Just my opinion- others may disagree greatly.

Dido what jenwill said.

Also, for those of us who spend more time reading threads to learn about gemstones & the industry than participating in the dialog, a chat would be harder to follow from one topic to the next. I think there would be a lot more irrelevant information and it would be much more difficult to hone in on the experts advice.

Ah. I didn't mean replace the forum at all! I see your points though.

Real time chat is fine for visiting and just
having a conversation about this and that.
This format is much better for the type
of conversations that happen here.
While it would be kewl to just visit
with a few people from on here once in a
while could you imagine "whitediamonds"
on real time chat?
pass the prozac :}

what's whitediamonds?

lots of people are voting and not saying anything :-) i think it's funny that six people have voted yes but zero have said why they would like it :-)

Ooops!!! I didn't know that. Or maybe I meant to say who, I forget.

As much as it would be nice to have some more timely responses, etc... the amount of traffic on the site during non-peak hours if quite low & I believe it would be more frustrating than anything.

Also, I would hate for information not to be archived in a searchable form.... half the usefulness of the forum is being able to go back through and read old threads (the other half, of course, the the witticisms and sardonic humor expressed....)

HI:

This type of forum is perfectly suited to its use of asnychronous technology for the reasons already stated, but especially b/c it allows the writer to post a "composed" message which precludes reflection--and that is especially helpful if/when discussions get "heated". I, for one, prefer well "composed" dialogue as opposed to, the potential for, "hastly" posted "chat".

Only one opinion though--mine.

good point - the few times when words/insults are thrown back and forth, it would be much easier for it to get out of hand. BUT it would also be more quickly forgotten since there wouldn't be (public)record of it. more good points, anyways :-). I wonder how many of the people that get on and browse around daily have a chat program already, like AIM or ICQ or Yahoo, Etc.
