Hi Guys,

I'm an avid reader on PS, but don't post much (as you can see) - mea culpa :(sad . I will definitely try to particicpate more actively from now on!!

You may remember that in November last year, I bought Arunajane's AVC (1.08ct M) and am finally starting to think about how I will set it. Firstly, I just want to say that Arunajane was a complete sweetie during the whole transaction and I hope she's doing well! Here''s the link to the sale: https://www.pricescope.com/forum/preloved-ps-jewels/i-am-selling-my-avc-ring-t168311.html

I'm going to link to a couple of others' threads, so please let me know if this is not acceptable (I'm new at this!) and I'll edit my post ASAP. Thanks in advance to those people - it shows I love your style!

Here is Arunajane's original thread on the AVC, with lots of pictures of the stone:

I already have an engagement ring (see my avatar), a haloed 2ct D pear, which I wear on my left ring finger and so wanted to wear the AVC on my right middle finger. After seeing Coatimundi's yummy bezel, I settled on wanting a very yellow gold which is not highly polished.

The problem is is that for some reason, I seem to be gravitating towards quite chunky gypsy or belcher rings, which I know are men's rings, but nevertheless. Here are a couple of the rings I'm liking:

I was hoping you could all advise me as to what you think I should do about setting this? Do you have any alternative recommendations? I have short, but thinnish fingers, I think maybe a size 7 on my middle finger (so not tiny!). I'm worried that the above types of rings will be too chunky and masculine on my hand.

I'm also worried about these gypsy-style affecting the light-return on the AVC - it's such a beautiful stone that I don't want to ruin it.

Who will set it is a whole other problem, so maybe I'll just deal with the setting style at this point! I'm in Australia, so it's going to be tricky no matter what!

Thanks in advance for your time and help, it's much appreciated!

Mich. :wavey:

Have you tried on the style of setting you want in person? If so and you love it, I'd say go for what you love.

I would not consider those styles men's ring styles. I have seen plenty of women's rings that were styled like that.

Mrssalvo, no unfortunately. As has been said on here before, Australia really is a backwater for a lot of things and one of them is jewellry. We only really have a couple of horrible chain stores and some random B&M jewellers who all make the same pave ring styles. Anything else has to be done virtually.

Thanks distracts, that gives me some comfort.

Does anyone think that this style would overwhelm the stone? I don't want it to look like an engagement ring!

THanks!

They are all great options, but I love, Love, LOVE the setting shown with the pink tourmaline.

Agree with Armywife, I really love that JKT ring you posted and think your AVC would look amazing in it!

Hi mich_t! I think your AVC would look amazing in the Julia Kay Taylor setting (pink tourmaline), which just happens to be my ring! I also really like Ganesha's rose gold setting. The wonderful thing about AVC's is that the cutting is so good that they look good in a variety of styles, so in a way, I don't think you can make a mistake.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide on!

Armywife13 and SparklyOEC, I agree this is a really gorgeous ring, especially in a really nice yellow gold!

Hi Aoife! I really like the eight prongs on Ganesha's ring (I hope she wouldn't mind a bit of emulation!). Would it look good on a middle finger do you think? Thanks can't wait to get into it, but I'm a bit anxious about what setting would be best!

Do you think it would look better E-W or N-S?

I think I will have to contact Mike R as he is the closest hand-forger to me and his work is just so lovely!

mich, I was just about to suggest that you contact Mike R. Do you remember the chunky (but very refined) ring he made for AJ? That was not my style at all, but really a work of art. He's a dream to work with, and closer to you on the east coast than us on the west coast.

ETA: I know he's super busy at the moment, and I think they're scheduling work for later in the year at this stage. Trust me, the wait will be more than worth it.

ZahraLeyla, I'm glad you replied. Your ring is absolutely gorgeous and is a testament to Mike's ability! I remember you had a lot of trouble mailing the stone to him. Mine is obviously a lot less, probably about $4000, but how did you end up getting it there and was it really expensive?

Yes, luckily that sort of extended timetable works for me as I have to save up the money for the setting! :D

Thanks for all your comments!

My fav. is Ganesha's rose gold 8 prong setting. It would look lovely on your hand and show off that AVC the best IMO. Since your fingers are short it seems the most dainty for that type of setting and I really like it a lot. But then, I'm not a bezel person either. IMO they just don't do a diamond justice.

I recall one video Jon did with an AVC set in a yellow gold bezel...4c. N (?) I think; and he commented that it looked smaller than the other 4 c he was comparing it to because is was in a bezel setting. In my opinion the 8 prong setting will highlight your stone beautifully. but that is my opinion.

Good luck!

Sorry Aoife, I just noticed that you said that this was your ring! Just wanted to say:  It's so lovely!!

Ariel144, I'm like you in that I tend to err more on the side of prongs rather than bezels. Do you think that Ganesha's style works better with a larger stone and less so with a smaller one?

so jealous, your ring is stunning!!!! :appl:

I think the style of Ganesha's ring would work beautifully with a smaller stone. However, if you really are thinking about contacting the phenomenally talented Mike R, you would be able to design/tweak/customize to show off the AVC to its best advantage, and he would undoubtedly be able to make suggestions. I'm hoping you'll continue to post here on the progress of your design ideas.

Thanks for the compliments on my ring, I love all my JKT jewelry.

I love the setting you posted with the pink tourmaline. I think Ganesha's setting is perfect for her gorgeous diamond, but I think the 8 prongs would really overpower a smaller stone.

Hi mich :wavey:
Awesome to hear you are setting the avc - cant wait to see how its new home turns out!
Cheers lovey for the kind words ;))

I couldnt agree more with seconding zhara's rec for mike robinson - as you know from my oec ring which was inspired by coatis awesome bezel- he can def. do "chelegant" (chunky and elegant) which is v. similar to the styles you are leaning toward. I think if done properly they wont be masculine at all and are very appropriate for a rhr..
I cant speak to mike's workload just now, however i do know he would love the chance to create something special for an avc - he's fond of the cut and of course had to endure lots of pics of that particular one ::)

Best of luck with the project and i look forward to the results
Xx aj

I had a look at Mike Robinson's Facebook page and he has true talent. If you have the opportunity to commission a piece from him that would be wonderful.

Firstly, sorry all for my rude silence, I've just handed in a paper that I have been trying to finish for 9 months and finally sent it off moments ago - the last two weeks I've been hell-bent on getting it out

Redheaddoll, I had the same thought as you. Sorry many prongs look so good on a larger stone, but maybe not on a smaller one.

Hi Arunajane!!! :wavey: No problems, I hope you are feeling better. So glad that you popped in. Yes, I've been admiring it regularly loose since the "adoption" but have really wanted to get it on my finger! I'm definitely leaning towards Mike R for this project. Your ring is TDF and 'chelegant' is exactly what i'm after - I never thought I'd say it but I have enough pave rings

ZahraLeyla, thanks for that info, it's really useful. Obviously you're lovely stone was a whole different ballgame in terms of shipping, but it did scare me off a bit from the thought of shipping overseas.

Luckily I'm not in a rush. I'll contact Mike and definitely keep you all in the loop. I'll probably need your opinions as I'm terribly indecisive!

Many thanks for all your help so far!

Mich.

Hi mich_t and everyone.

I live in Australia as well and have been an on and off lurker for the past few months. I can't keep away... all the rings are so beautiful!!

I have been especially reading about the AVC lately, and have decided that I would like to get one too - for my 40th!
(mich_t, congratulations on getting AJ's beautiful AVC!!! Cant wait to see it set!!)

But I am new to all this, so was hoping you could help? May I ask...
1 - How can I get in touch with Mike Robinson? I couldn't get anything by googling the name.

2 - Can I get in touch with you mich_t to ask some questions about the AVC?

Thanks in advance!
