Basically I have it narrowed down between two diamonds. One is 1.21ct GIA G color SI1, I got the jeweller down to about 6,200 and I got him to give it to me with a nice .5ct setting for 6,800, which is more then I watned to spend, but I did look nice together. I know this diamond is good and has the right porportions. The next diamond I am not to sure about, but its bigger and cheaper, which makes me a little weary, but its still nice. It is a 1.37ct EGL(INTL) F color SI2. The price on this one is 4,600, and 5,800 with the setting. I have listed the spec on the EGL diamond, maybe someone can tell me if it sounds good. I think I am actually leaning more towards the 1.21 ct diamond. Does that seem small, or is that around a normal size for an engagement ring. My girlfiend is pretty tiny with small hands.

This would be alot easier if I could just ask her, but I dont want her to know I have actually started looking on my own, but knowing her anything will be good.

Here are the specs on the EGL diamond.

It is an EGL (USA) certified 1.37 diamond
certification number is 2730420826
color is F
clarity is SI2
Premium Cut
dimensions are 7.16- 7.09 X 4.321 mm
Total Depth 60.5%
Table Width 60%
Crown Height 13%
Pavillion Depth 43%
Girdle S. TK FAC
Symmetry is very good
polish is good
cutlet none
Grain Nil
Flourence None

Thanks for reading and all your help

The EGL diamond appears to be decently cut, be careful with SI2 as it may not be eyeclean, so ask if you can check it out away from the store lights so you can get a better idea. If you are interested in this one, make the sale final ( and get it in writing) that the diamond checks out to your satisfaction in all aspects with an independant appraisal. Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

Also you can post the proportions of the GIA diamond if you wish, then we can give you some feedback on this diamond.

You are most welcome Titans! The above diamond is shallow which suggests it isn''t well cut, do you have any others you are considering?

Thanks Again,
I am going back to a different place tommorow to check again, Is there any certain parameters I should be looking for so I dont have to keep bugging you.
Is there a chart that says what size it should be, depth, table and ect.?

You are not bugging me at all Titans!

Here are some numbers you can use as a guide to help you find a well cut round diamond,

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!
And from expert John Pollard

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

With that said, here''s a "Cliff''s Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

WOW that is some great information, exactly what I was looking for. At least now I can have an Idea of what I should be looking for when I am at the store.

Thanks Again

You are most welcome!

He wanted around 6,200, but I got him to give me the diamond and the setting for 6,700 and the setting has about .5cts on it
