Hello to all,
I am looking at a diamond engagement ring, here is what has been given to me, please let me know if you think this is a good deal or not:

Round
Shape: "brilliant"
Weight 1.5ct
Clarity VS1
Colour: G
Measurements 7.19 - 7.27mm x 4.62mm
Proportions "very good"
Girdle: medium 4% faceted
Culet pointed
Table width 57%
cr height 15.5%
pav. depth 44%
Finish grade: "good"

Price $17,000 USD
- this price includes white gold setting (which is what I wanted), I wanted to get a knife-edge solitaire, they are also throwing in small side diamonds.

Please let me know what you think, thanks!!

Hi h,

I would have to say pass on this one. It''s facing up smaller than it should. Less than my 1.40, so you''re paying for that magic number, but you''re not getting that size. Also, I don''t know who graded this, but "finish grade good", is not sounding too good.

Are you looking online, or locally?

Do you have a picture or an idealscope image? Also, those numbers aren''t computing in the HCA (says the girdle is dangerously thin OR the values are wrong)... without that info it is hard to judge... but Ellen''s comment about it''s face-up size is probably enough to deep six this one anyways.

Not good at all! A 1.5 ct. stone should be 7.4mm in diameter.

Look for measurements around these numbers:

table 54-57

depth 60-62

crown angle 34-35

pavilion angle 40.6-41

To make life even easier, use this search and put in Excellent-Excellent for cut and check GIA and AGS only for labs.

I came up with a few nice examples in the G-H VS range:

I would pass also, you have a very nice budget by the looks of it, and you could get something like DiamondSeeker suggests, if you are open to the idea of shopping online.

If not, and you are set on buying from a jewellery store, then do the same again if you see any diamonds you like, and post the proportions. But if you would consider buying online, you could get a fab diamond / ring for your budget!

Thanks for help. The ring is from a jeweler. The certification is "HRD" from what the certificate says!

I rechecked the specs, and there wasn''t a typo, those dimensions are correct.

Maybe I go with a slightly smaller diamond and try to get better quality instead....

I appreciate everyone''s help. I have seen the diamond, it looks very nice, but that is from someone who does not look at diamonds that much!!

Hi there. If you check out the links Diamondseeker posted, these are great stones. As you see you definately don''t need to go smaller to get great quality for your budget. If you are willing to spend $19k for a 1.5ct stone, you will have lots of options!

I know some people are uncomfortable buying sight unseen from an online vendor, I was initally a little concerned. I live in Australia and bought from WF and had it shipped here. As soon as I opened the box I knew I did the right thing. I got a much better quality stone than I would have found here, for a far better price. If you do find it''s not exactly what you want, most vendors have excellent return policies, so you can''t lose really.

Is it worth getting this ring appraised? I know that was mentioned but I am not sure if it is worth going that far or not....

I think that''s a personal choice. I decided not to have my ring appraised, as I personally felt I could trust the AGS certificate and WF, if Brian said it''s good enough to be an ACA, that was enough for me. If I had have purchased an ELG stone, I would have certainly had it appraised just to confirm that the colour and clarity grades were not off, as there has been some suggestion that this can be the case.

However, this is a big purchase and you need to be comfortable knowing you got what you paid for. It can''t hurt to have it appraised for peace of mind, and depending where you live and who your insurer is, this might be required in order to have the ring insured for a realistic price.

You don''t mean the one above, do you? It is clearly not well cut and it is priced pretty high. I certainly wouldn''t waste money getting it appraised. Do you want to pay for a 1.5 ct. diamond that faces up like a 1.4 ct. stone?

Ditto!

To clarity my previous post, I thought you mean getting another stone appraised, or asking the question in general. Getting this one done IMHO is a waste of time. Trust D.seeker on this one, she and others can help find you some awesome stones that will outshine this one hands down.

No, I would suggest forgetting about this one. By the way, HRD are a good grading lab, not so well known in the USA.

Yes, they are.

As someone else said, you don''t need to go smaller, just try to find a stone with better proportions/specs.

Ok, fair enough, I will not pursue this ring.

If I will ask the jeweler for a 1.5ct ring with the specs from diamondseeker,

table 54-57

depth 60-62

crown angle 34-35

pavilion angle 40.6-41

See what he comes back with!

Table is large at 61%, I would look for one smaller. Incidentally with the numbers given, if a stone comes along with numbers a bit outside them, in some circumstances a diamond can still be worth considering, subject to expert confirmation that it is a good stone. Depth is a preference for example in some cases, you could go a bit deeper than 62%, to around 62.4 for example, if everything else is right with the stone.

If you do a search for UnionDiamond, you can read others' experiences with them.
