Hello,

I've been lurking around this great forum for a while and really need some expert non-biased info on my situation. I have recently purchased a 1 ct cushion from JA and have an agreement with another online vendor to make a setting for me based on the dimensions of the stone that I purchased. My intent is to have a local jeweler set the stone for me but a retailer I spoke to has me a bit freaked out about the project in terms of the possibility of stone damage when being set and the overall appearance of the ring (probably because they are trying to drum up a sale).

So my questions are these:

Does stone damage happen very often when setting? The setting would be a 4 prong for the center stone which is flanked by sidestones

If a jeweler has the dimensions of a center stone, a picture of the front of the stone and it's specs will he be able to produce a setting that will fit the diamond perfectly?

I realize it's a convoluted situation but I haven't found any settings I like as much as the one this vendor can produce and I didn't really like the center stones that he was able to offer me.

Thank you for any advice you may be able to offer.

Is the vendor who is making your ring unable or unwilling to set it? Many of the custom jewelers will set your stone.

I'd either have the setting sent to the diamond vendor to set, or have the stone sent to the setting vendor. I definitely would not involve a third jeweler in setting a stone and setting that he didn't sell.

I was contemplating the same as you. In the end, I thought it is best to send my stone to ERD to set it since they're designing my setting anyway. I don't want someone else who doesn't know the setting to F it up. Send it to the person who has your setting!

I don't know how often damage to stones happens when setting, but I know you can insure a loose stone w/Jewelers Mutual to cover yourself just in case.

Jeweler should be able to make a setting with just dimensions.

Who is making your ring? I would have them set your diamond. I wouldn't involve a third party at all. That's just not a good idea. I would also make sure your ring is insured by JM. You can get the jeweler you've contracted with to send you a note that specify's the work you've contracted for "A ladies ring, this metal, this size, this style, estimated to be this price and deposit given for this amount." and send that to JA to augment your stone's information and they will insure it as a ring in progress.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone! Unfortunately I've painted myself into a corner in regards to my timeline. Like many its been a classic case of "analysis paralysis" in my quest to create the perfect ring within my limited budget! While sending the stone off to the setting creator seems ideal I don't know that the timing will work as it's not yet in my possession.
I sure have messed this one up...

I have purchased settings from 1 location and coloured stones from another then had them set by a third party. DON'T. It may not work out well. 2 out of 3 looked like crap! I'd suggest you delay a bit and do it right the first time. It's just not worth the trouble to mess up something so important - at least that's the route I'd suggest. Wait and get the setting place to set the stone.

Well is the stone on the way? Because the quickest way would have been to have the stone sent directly to the setter. Whatever you do, as has already been stated, you need to have the diamond insured before it is set, and that probably only can be done with Jeweler's Mutual.
