Hello :wavey:

First post, long time lurker. I've been in the market for a 1.3 to 1.4 ct G-H VS2-SI1 ex-ex-ex round cut and came across this one at my local jeweler.

I've checked HCA and it scored under 2.0. I've looked at the stone in person and it is "eye-clean". All things considered, I think the price is fair and I might pull the trigger.

GIA report - http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/ind...tVerification&reportno=1119508046&weight=1.40

Please offer your thoughts/opinions or any advice in general.

Thank you.

numbers are 'nice' - have you seen it in person? Do you like it?

It passes the rejection tests. I suppose since you can see it in person, at this point you just need decide if it appeals to your eye and if the price is right and the stone adequately eye clean and of a color that appeals to your eye.

Note is has longer lower girdle facets. Thoug GIA rounds and that number is an est., longer lgf does give a particular look to a stone with thin arrows and a flavour to the light return (more pinpoint and less broad flash compared to short lgfs). That is the only thing that is sort of a taste element of the stone that if you are interested, you might wish to compare to a shorter lgf stone to see which appeals to your eye. It is a sublte thing, but then so is all of the stuff people nit pick about on PS

I do like it, though there is something holding me back and I can't figure out what it is...

The color is fine, it's not an E color and I can certainly tell a difference when the two is compared side by side. But I couldn't tell the difference between the H and a G color.

This SI1 appears eye clean to me (viewed from top down from half arms length or so), under the loupe I can see some inclusions but mostly hidden in the facets...

Dreamer_D, do you mind elaborating a bit on the long lgf? How is that determined? I definitely don't have an eye for these subtle things but I would love to learn.

Ah-ha! I see it! On this particular stone it is 80% and as Dreamer_D stated it can be rounded. I can see that the lgf takes up more space than the pavilion main facets...is that how you determine one has long or short lgf?

Some reading about this also seems to point that modern cuts tend to have longer lgf, is having thinner arrows a "bad" thing?

Thank you Stone-Cold11

Length of a lower half is with respect to the pavilion facet. Size wise, as long as it is not too extreme that leads to other issues such as leakage or obstruction, is personal taste, 75% is now at the lower end of norm for modern brilliant but still way larger than what it once were.

This article by a PS tradesmember elaborates on Stone's comments re. lgf & extremes https://www.pricescope.com/journal/do_pavilion_mains_drive_light_return_modern_round_brilliant/

I wouldn't buy a SI clarity diamond that has a graining issue or a diamond with strong fluorescence.
By time it can make them look foggy.
A 4% girdle is also something I would avoid.

Er -- the cert shows no flour.

Question: How bad can graining be if it got "excellent polish"?

Girlde is medium to slightly thick (ideal IMO between strength + spread) -- where are you getting 4%?

Thanks for all the good information - I think I'm good on the girdle thickness. It falls in the "green" on the chart posted by JohnQuixote.

I'm going to go back and look at the stone one more time before I pull the trigger. Besides comparing with another stone with shorter lgf, is there anything else I should be looking out for?
