Hi all,
Thank you in advance for any help this forum can offer and happy holidays.

I am looking to buy an ideal cut Ex, Ex, Ex round 1.69-1.79 carot; VS2, SI1. I've done a lot of research on what I should be looking for but am confused about the table %/ depth %/ pavilion angles %, etc. I found a website that listed a super ideal cut as having a table of 55-57% and depth of 59.5-61.9%, but I have not found anything as it relates to the other angles - probably because its too difficult to generalize.

Assuming my filters on Blue Nile are the following: Ex,Ex, Ex and table percentages of 55-57% and depth of 59.5%-61.9% can I assume these diamonds will sparkle pretty much the same? or if my filters were simply the carot size and Ex,ex, ex?

I am not inclined to use Blue Nile however its just the easiest platform I have found to view a bunch of diamonds at one place in order to get a guage on pricing.

The 'Knowledge' tab at the top of the Pricescope window has a lot of good educational resources, to learn about angles and various parameters.

We don't know your exact preferences (color, price), but I've found some examples of great stones, loosely based on the constraints you specified.

Here are some options from various trusted vendors:

1.7ct, G, SI1

1.573ct, J, VS2

1.57ct, H, VS2

1.63ct, D, VS2

Thank you for directing me. I found the HCA calculator, this tool is amazing.

Generally, here are parameters that will usually land you in ideal cut territory. But I'd still only buy from a vendor who has idealscope images and photos of the actual stones. I have personally bought from Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash and they both have excellent images and diamonds! They also offer lifetime upgrade policies with full amount paid towards a new stone.

table: 54-58

depth: 60-62.3

crown angle: 34-35.0

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

In addition to the stones already posted, here's one from WhiteFlash:

If you are looking for a true Ideal cut stone, I would look only at AGSL Ideal cut diamonds. You can find in a GIA Ex cut, however their grade is very broad and much harder to determine what compares to an Ideal cut. Vendors as mentioned like Whiteflash, Good Old Gold, Brian Gavin Diamonds, Infinity, sell their branded diamonds which are top of the line, but you do pay a premium.....that is not to say you could never find diamonds as comparable elsewhere for less.

Thank you for answering my questions.

I am hoping to spend no more than $18,000 on the diamond.

I was leaning toward a color rating of E/F, however based on what I have read so far on color going to G or H should not be an issue because color is only noticeable face down? Looking at Brian gavin and White Flash it looks like the sweet spot is F, G, and H.

I input a handful of diamonds from Brian Gavin into the HCA calculator and all have come out with a rating of 1.5 or better. As previously noted I checked GIA Ex, Ex, Ex ratings and they vary widely. None of the GIA 3X diamonds on Blue Nile got a score better than a 2.0. All were listed as either

This is going to be a lot harder than I thought :(

Not necessarily.

The stone G stone I linked above from Good Old Gold meets all of your criteria and is under budget ( http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11541/ ).

I would get in touch with Jon at Good Old Gold, and see if it might be possible to get a video with this stone and some others in your price range, so you can compare side-by-side. That way, you'll have an expert's opinion and you'll be able to see the differences with your own eyes via video. Much easier and more effective than plugging in lots of numbers.

Don't get intimidated!

Thank you for those who posted diamond links.

RockyRacoon-I called GOG and placed the stone you recommended on hold. GOG is going to shoot video and provide me with it soon. I think the stone is great value but slightly concerned about the medium fluoro - I don't want it turning blue in the sunlight..not sure if this happens but its UV light right? I am also hoping the G color is closer to an F.

Thanks all for the recommendation. It's becoming real now that I've put a deposit on something.

Good to hear! GOG is a top-notch operation, and I'm sure they'll be able to give you some insight into the effect of the fluor (personally, I prefer a stone with medium/strong fluor), as well as this stone's precise color. It's great to get a video, as well, so that you can see exactly what the vendor is talking about, and determine if this is the right stone for you, or if there might be a better fit.

Best of luck in finding the perfect stone!
