Please help with a setting question

If I were to purchase a loose diamond, would I have problems getting it set by another jeweler? I heard jewelers don''t like to set stones that are bought elsewhere because of liability issues. Is this true? Considering the stone has a medium (or thicker) girdle, will I have a difficult time finding someone to set a loose diamond? Would it cost more too?

Some jewelers will and some won''t. Find one who will stand behind his or her work and who will take responsibility for your diamond during the setting process in case anything were to happen. Get it in writing. Are you considering an online vendor? I bought my diamond and then shipped it to Whiteflash, who created a setting and set my diamond for me.

There are many jewelers that would be delighted to build a setting for your diamond.
Do the research. Go visit jewelers in your area. Ask to see the work they have done. Ask for references. If you do not have any quality jewelers in your are there are many that are now available to you over the internet. Keep doing your research. Some jewelers may charge more to set a diamond they did not sell however most will charge the same to set your diamond or theirs.

Some might charge a setting fee if you didn''t purchase the stone from them, like jasmize said, make sure you find out if they will cover the stone if something happens. you might have a harder time if you''re trying to find someone to set a stone you didn''t buy from them into a setting you didn''t buy from them. I think most would set a stone into a setting you purchased from them.

I''m sure you can find a reliable jeweler who will set a stone for you! Some won''t, but I wouldn''t let this discourage you from buying a setting from another vendor.
