Please help to identify a diamond bracelet !!!

I bought this bracelet at church sale last week and having trouble figuring out what stones is used . This is a snake or wrap around bracelet made with what appears to me rose cut or uncut diamonds. The inside is made of gold color but the sides is silver color . So what are the brownish dark stones surrounded the whole bracelet? It look like enamel but it’s not. What could it be that where used in Victorian times?! Please help me to identify. Maybe price value too.

Have the diamonds been tested? Some look like rose cut. Perhaps it is Polki diamonds, which would suggest Indian manufacture. The dark panels could be polished agate, or indeed petrified wood, which would suggest Cartier in the 1960’s, however they were not known for rose cuts as much during that time.

It is clearly high quality. Are there hallmarks? It doesn’t seem typical of Victorian style. At any rate, no matter what it is made of, it is beautiful. You have good eyes!

Thanks so much for the reply!! Yes it was tested by my jeweler to be real diamonds and the inside is solid gold but the outside of bangle is solid silver . I never thought of it being wood . I need to research . Any other suggestions?

I’m wondering if it’s shell, possibly tortoise shell? A Very interesting piece and beautiful. I agree it’s probably vintage or older. what a shame no hallmarks, we might have been able to further investigate origin / age.

This black part could be a Bakelite.

The dark parts could be amber, particularly older Russian amber can be dark like that. Is it warm to the touch or cool? Warm would indicate wood/amber/bakelite cool would indicate a stone.

Hi there, as far as black-ish things used in Victorian times, here are a few options:

1) lava - typically this is very lightweight due to lava stone being very porous. It can come in a few different colors, typically with a more greenish hue
2) bog oak - wood which has been fossilized in peat, with a brownish hue, also lightweight and with a matte finish, will be warm to the touch rather than cold like glass or stone
3) gutta percha - made of tree resin, it is brownish-black and matte. it is molded rather than carved, and gives off a rubbery smell if rubbed vigorously.
4) jet - a type of fossilized wood, can be shiny or matte, close to a true black, lightweight, soft and warm to touch. can be faceted and carved. it will have natural cracks and fissures when viewed under a loupe.
5) French jet - finely made glass cast to look like jet, will be cold to the touch rather than warm
6) onyx - a type of quartz or chalcedony, actual stone, sometimes dyed. highly polished, cold to the touch, heavy.

Yours looks quite shiny and polished, so I'd guess either jet or onyx depending on how heavy your bracelet is, which makes sense as jet was considered the rarest and finest material.

It uses so much metal that it's hard to believe it's precious metal -- on the reverse, there's no effort to save metal. So that leads me to doubt those are genuine diamonds.
