I recently started to read about diamonds. I am new to this game. I have been reading PriceScope for about an hour and feel so overwhelmed! There is too much information! I see that here are plenty of experts here who I hope can find it in their hearts to help me. I am desperate. I would like to buy an engagement ring by Christmas this year. I do not have too much time to research because of work ( public accounting! : ( ).

Can someone help me find a complete engagement ring or loose diamond to buy.

I am looking for :

  • Round cut, very good or better
    1.7 - 2.1 carats
Nothing darker than H Color (Preferably)
    Preferably SI2/3 or better
    Price max 12k
    Want Platinum Tiffany setting

Me or my girlfriend are amateurs when it comes to diamonds. I guess I can settle for whatever looks good.

Can someone explain where to go when you buy a loose diamond? Where are the reputable jewelers. Can I just go to any jeweler that sells platinum rings?

I live in Atlanta, GA. Even a referral to a jeweler here would be greatly appreciated. I just really don't want to pay Jared's or Brown & Co's inflated prices. Please help me find something.

Thank you.

P.S. Please let me know if I posted in the wrong section.

Well, looking through the whiteflash.com selection with your criteria- there are no ideal cut stones in your price range matching the color and clarity you would like..... there are a few excellent cut stones with H SI in the 1.7range, but the prices start at 12K for just the stone- not including a setting....

there are not real images as they are virtual inventory- so if interested you would need to contact whiteflash and ask for images- idealscope to determine the cut and sparkle factor.

Dont forget- the better the cut of the stone (excellent-ideal...) the more sparkle. Cut directly relates to sparkle of the stone.

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2555585.htm

that is an example.. keep in mind these are excellent cut, but you have no pictures or ASET images to confirm the cut of the stone. If you use the search diamond feature on whiteflash with your criteria you can see the options.

very good stones with your criteria range from 10K and up. It looks like, with your "wants" and budget, you are looking at a 1.7-1.75 stone tops in terms of size. Have you ever seen different diamond colors in person? different cut qualities in person? You may find that an I is no different than an H to your eye- or you may see a huge difference! You wont' really know until you see for yourself. Also- keep thinking about the cut quality. Do you want a bigger stone- or more sparkly stone? Dropping down in cut grade- (grades are ideal. excellent, very good, good, fair) may mean bigger size- maybe not. You need to check the dimensions of the stone as well.. It very well may be that a "very good" or "good" cut stone of 1.8 carats, is actually, in dimensions smaller face up than a 1.6 ideally cut stone.

I would call Mark at EngagementRingsDirect and ask him to help you. Or look at ID Jewelry Online. Or Eternity Diamonds. None of them have a ton of information online, but all of them can get you Pictures, And Ideal Scope, and Images of the Certificates as well as advise you on the cut quality of the diamonds. Mention you are a Pricescope if you do call. But because their websites don't list each stone with a ton of information up front, their prices can be a little more competitive than say HighPerformanceDiamonds or BrianGavinDiamonds or GoodOldGold which are vendors I would usually suggest for an ideal round . Your budget is low for what you want. If you can up it by 2-5 K you will be in a more realistic range-- and then you can look at the second set of vendors I suggested.

ditto- the typically reccommended vendors will only get you a "very good" maybe an "excellent" cut RB at 1.7-1.75 H SI2. There will be no room to go bigger, and the stones they have are all 12K-13K for the 1.7 range in your "desired" color and clarity.

great finds D&T. OP- as you see, the budget you set will pretty much get you a 1.7 H SI2 in the neighborhood of excellent-verygood

hehee.. can you tell, I like to live vicariously through others :cheeky: with a healthy budget or not. Just love finding the perfect pair

totally agree with this! I too like to find the stone/setting I would pick with the criteria and budget allotted by others! If only, it were my budget for another ring, I would have a field day finding my perfect stone!

or how bout this:

I would also consider an I ( I don't think you would be disappointed) especially when the cut makes a world of difference:

This puts you under budget, to get your platinum ring.

ETA: here is another loose stone:
Large and looks to be gorgeous!

There is a PS discount code as well

Ok, i wanted to show you this stone for many reasons...
2.13 ct- H- SI1....IGI certified.... now IGI is looser so the color grade may be 1-2 grades lower as well as clarity.. this stone may very well be a 2.13 I-J SI2-I1 stone. Also, you can see darkness around the edges, more leakage, and a black carbon spot smack in the middle.

D&T beat me to the punch! I was going to suggest feeling out an I. If you get an ideal cut- the color will not be as noticable, it will sparkle like mad, and help you stay withing your budget all said and done.

eek! leakage under the table- look at the yellow showing through! Am I totally off in saying that ? I think knowing what is not great is good education as well!
