Ok, my phonics are working on this one and I love the designer and do not want to butcher their name. How is A. Jaffe pronounced?

Is the J pronounced like an H?
Is the J silent?
or is it a hard J like Jake
or none of the above?

Thanks in advance for your help. I am still learning.

My very first doctor (pediatrician) long, long ago was Dr. Jaffe, so I know this one. :D

JAF (rhymes with "half") -EE

PS Yes, a hard J, as in Jell-O :D

Thanks I really appreciate it.

i saw the title of this post and thought sure you would be asking for the pronunciation of vatche

jaffe is much easier!

So how do you pronounce Vatche? And while we''re at it, how do you pronounce Gelin Abaci?

When I was speaking to someone on the phone from WF recently, they pronounced it "Vatch-ay". But a sales lady in a jewelry store kept pronouncing it "Vatch-ee". So I''m clueless...lol. I''d tend to think that the person at WF was pronouncing it correctly, though, since they work directly with Vatche and sell their lovely settings. The jewelry store where the sales lady worked didn''t carry Vatche, and she''d only heard of them in the trade magazines.

You know, I vaguely remember that Vatche is not pronounced the way we''d think--"Vatch-ay"--because I was told he''s not French. "Vatch-ee" may actually be the correct pronounciation.

Ok boys and girls - here''s another one!!! How do you pronounce " culet" ? Is it kool-et? or kool-ay? I never know with these things, I speak english and pretty good spanish, and I''ve learned ( a very little) french, so I''m all mixed up!!

I am pretty sure it''s pronounced as if it were a "Q" ...as in Q-lay. I was looking at diamonds in a mall store once, and the salesperson was trying to act as if he knew something about diamonds. When he pronounced it "cutlet" like it was a piece or pork or something, I pretty much got out of there as fast as I could go.

I think he''s Italian, isn''t he? Maybe someone who know''s Italian will chime in and set us all straight. When I was talking to the person at WF, I didn''t know how to prounounce "laureato", either. Even after I heard them say it, I''m STILL not sure how to say it...lol.

Hmmm...I thought it was CYUU-let. I''ve said that and haven''t been corrected in a jewelry store.

FYI, here''s another one....melee. I thought it was pronounced mel-AY, but I got corrected at said jewelry store...was told it was mel-EE. Tricky.

Oops, I guess that''s the way I should''ve wrote the pronounciation " Q-lay" instead of "kool" ! So it is a "lay" and not "let" ?? Ok. Did that guy really say " cutlet" like pork and veal???!!!! LOL

FireGoddess, that one I know!!! It''s MEL - EE, rhymes with " belly"

Okay, I was WRONG! I know it''s hard to believe...lol. I just looked up culet, and the dictionary says it''s pronounced like Q-lit! I have heard it pronounced both as Q-let and Q-lay, but never Q-lit before. So now I know something new.

And yes he really did say cutlet! I had such a hard time keeping a straight face!

One thing I''ve learned about a LOT of sales people...they will never correct you on ANYTHING! All they want to do is sell you something, and most of them will not risk insulting you by telling you that you are prounouncing something wrong. They are too afraid of loosing the sale. Especially if they are working on commision. I''ve seen some that will tell you the ugliest diamond in the whole world is an awesome stone if they think that''s the one you really want to buy.

I''m pretty lucky. I have a jeweler that really knows her stuff, and she will be honest with me. I''ve looked at gemstones before that I thought I liked. She has told me to look at something else before I make up my mind. Often, the second stone she shows me is less expensive than the one I originally wanted, but is a much nicer stone for the money. Just this week I went in to look at a cognac topaz and diamond ring that I''d had my eye on. While I was looking at that one, she asked me if I would consider looking at a garnet ring that had just come in (she knows I''m a nut for garnets). The garnet ring was a much prettier ring, even though the diamonds in it were much fewer and smaller than in the topaz ring. It was also around $100 less expensive. I ended up walking out with the garnet on my finger

I don''t know the answer to that one, but I know that "mandrill" is one of those ugly baboons with the big blue hineys.

Haaaaaa, that was a good one and sent me searching thru 2000 photos for a mandrill hiney. All I could find was a frontal shot but look at those colors. Now I''m thinking about a custom made piece of bling with cornflower blue and padparadsha sapphires. It''s amazing the effect some of these posts has on my neural pathways.

I know Vatche is def not italian, i think i read online that he is Armenian. Anyway when i went to try on the x-prong at Fortunoff, I was pronouncing it "Va- chee" or something like that and she pronounced it " Va - shay " The last name on her card looks armenian too, so mabye her pronounciation was right, but not 100% sure cause i didnt ask her the correct way to say it... anyone else have a clue how to pronounce it?

What I wanna know is how to pronounce Leon Mege''s last name. I''ve heard Wink say "Mayzh", but I''ve also heard that that isn''t his real last name...
