...to search through the forums, but I just got lost looking through all the pages. I thought it would be much quicker if I registered on this forums and asked directly.

I am looking to purchase a diamond engagement ring and have done some research.

I am looking for the following:

Cut: Round Ideal or better cut, Would love to have it H&A quality.
Carat: at least 1.00
Color: D-G
Clarity: VS or VVS
No florescence

I don''t know anything about proportions so I am wondering if anyone can put the most ideal proportions for a round solitaire diamond or at least provide a website link that would provide that kind of info.

I know about Tiffanys and Cartier, but where else should I go to buy diamonds. In other words, what are some of the other top retailers?

I am not just interested in going to those kinds of places, but are there other places where I can go to get great diamonds without paying a premium price?

Can anyone help me with this, or provide me a link that answers these questions?

Thanks in advance!

Give yourself time to get oriented here; the tutorial above under knowledge should help a lot, reviewing the kinds of things you'll want to be concerned about, with respect to proportions, for example.

I should think something like this one would be in line with what you're looking for, but based on your very brief review of requirements, you have a big field of options to consider; do you have budget in mind?

Best,

There are some good tutorials here and on other websites such as www.googoldgold.com and www.niceice.com etc that will help you get familiar with what really makes a difference in how a stone performs. The following specs are a good guideline on getting a great ideal cut round stone, but there can be beautiful stones outside of these specs also. These are a very tight definition of "ideal", published a while ago here. An idealscope will help you determine the light performance of stones as you look at them in person. Independant jewelry (non-mall) stores can be a good place to look at stones. If you are informed about what you are looking for and market/internet prices, many will be competitive.

Total depth between 59 - 61.8%
Table diameter between 55 - 57%
Crown angle between 34.3 - 34.8 degrees
Pavilion angle between 40.6 - 40.9 degrees
Girdle: thin to medium, faceted or medium, faceted
Culet: GIA None or AGS Pointed
Polish: GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal
Symmetry: GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal

Good luck!

WOW!

Thanks guys/gals for all your suggestions. It will take some time until I read through these tutorials and websites. My budget is around the $4000-$8000 range.

I really like the one that was linked from the post above, but I couldnt'' find a price.

I''ll keep you guys updated, and if you guys have any more thoughts I''d truly appreciate it.

Thanks again
