After much deliberation regarding a brick and mortar jeweler detailed below, I have decided to start over. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/trade-in-policies-and-slight-of-hand.234100/

I am looking for an elongated oval or pear that i can set in a chunky halo.

Center Stone:
Shape: Elongated Oval (l/w > 1.55) or Pear
Color: D, E, F, or very white G
Clarity:Relatively eye clean (VS1 - Si1?)
Low to no bowtie
flourescence: none to faint
Fiery not crushed ice like a cushion

I'd like to be around $9k (plus or minus 1k) all in with the setting.

Setting I had been considering had 3 pointers in the halo, and 2 pointers along the band. had been looking in platinum as she is the medical profession and uses hand sanitizer often and the first jeweler said that white gold may not hold up well.

Ideally I'd like to have this made in the next 3 weeks, so i can propose in iceland, but i'd rather have the right thing, rather than get something less than ideal made quickly.

please help me find a diamond and recommend someone to make it for me.

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

3 weeks is a tight schedule no matter who makes the ring. I would say custom is out.

echo-ing whitewave, custom is definitely out. i'd suggest calling IDJewelry or Good Old Gold (or both) and see what can be found. Both sell Gabriel & Co settings, i think you could find a setting that works well for you. You can always post the stones found to garner opinion, too.

Here's one address for long cushions WWW. - I have no idea what exists in stock.

Given the tight schedule, the diamond could be given away in a disposable 'presentation setting'. Some jewelers might discount the thing against a future setting - not sure who & how.

-

Also, Blue Nile lets you search their database for a Length / Width ratio - for the relevant shapes. To me, an oval or pear are Long toward 2/1 - with some leeway; I am finding 10 listings at BN over 1.7 L / 1W - this is the largest:

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD08903844

I am not sure what setting arrangements you can make with BN - for a 'presentation setting'.

One detail to keep in mind: since the proportions of the stones would be somewhat unusual, it takes some further consideration if & what stock settings can stretch, so to speak.

______

Disclaimer:

I'd vote that the Long stones are worth the trouble. Will be following your search with quite some pelasure !

Your requirements and timeline dont match up very well. I suggest you propose with a stand in ring and work on getting the engagement ring when you
get back. You're spending $9-10K and I dont think you should be rushing this with the requirements that you have. A well cut 1.55 ratio will be difficult
to find on its on. When you do find it, its probably not going to fit in a standard oval halo setting (due to the ratio) so you'll need to go custom. Custom doesnt
happen in 3 weeks...

Or perhaps look for the stone and put it in a $200 solitaire setting and work on the halo setting when you get back.

PS.

This is why I am not picking a pear (there were none to reject at BN): WWW - unusual proportions may also mean somewhat unexpected shape (triangular) & a texbook 'bow-tie' (not in fashion much).

There are nicer long pears, for sure ... I am not seeing one within 10 minutes of search. [If only this one had a small sister ... WWW]

Here is a long pear that looks decent.

Edit...possible setting

Jeff Cooper...I would not want an airline

I'd rather have David Klass make it though.

Here is a stand-in setting $180...then you could have a nicer setting made when you get back.

Would you consider a pre-owned ring? Some of our members are experts at scouring the second-hand marketplace for great finds. This may be your best bet for finding something within your 3-week timeline.

Also, can you explain a little bit why you decided on a "chunky" halo design with very large melee? Is this a specific look that your intended has said she wants?

That is a pretty pear, but 3 weeks for James Allen these days is a risk.

Thanks for all of your responses. before i read them all, a couple things:
  1. she wants an elongated oval,
  2. she also likes standard pears (or maybe just a slightly longer pear)
  3. the first ring we saw that we both really liked was an oval with the chunky halo
  4. yes, preowned is perfectly acceptable

This is the first ring that really caught our eye, it is .90 surround by approximately 3 pointers, and 2 pointers on the ring.

I'd like to go bigger, narrower, and more colourless. but this is what made us first get excited.

Ditto...that's why I think it would be best just to go with a stand-in solitaire...still could be an issue. I think all vendors will have an issue with
a halo on a fancy cut and a 3 week timeline. I think he should punt this idea, set the stone in a stand-in and have the halo made when he gets back.

okay. I am fine with waiting and not proposing in iceland, or using a standin.

Are we concerned at all that this one has such a shallow table? 46% is much lower than the guidelines I've seen for ovals. Also doesnt look like you get a moneyback return with IDNID. Do you all feel comfortable buying diamonds without even seeing a video?

That oval sucks.

Uncommon & right up my alley - the diamond, not the ring. The oval breaks every rule in the book & then some ! E VS1 & priced as an outlier.
Nice to see ...

Something else: WWW
That is nice, but she is not a cushion kind of girl

No...I would never recommend this stone...even as a slightly quirky stone. Needs to be returnable. You have no idea how it performs and at a 46% depth
chances are slim that it will perform well.

Ok. So you are now open to JUST a stone or the whole shebang and propose later?

I want to get the right thing. If i can make it work i will propose in iceland, but I am not set on that idea... even though it would be amazing since she thinks there is no way i can pull it off
