Hi,
I have finally figured out the setting, ring size and setting material (was going between gold, to gold with platinum prongs, to all platinum) but i am still having lots of trouble picking out a good diamond.

I did find a good looking one with a great idealscope but i was too slow and it is sold. I am buying from Whiteflash and am looking at their expert selections and a cut above diamonds. I am finding it very hard to choose, to a newbie most of the idealscopes look the same. Can anyone please help?

I was looking for anything bigger than 0.8 carat, vs1-vs2 and g-h. hoping to keep the diamond under 5k.

Thanks!

Hi,

If you want to get a bigger diamond at lower cost, try some fancy shapes say, cushion with no girdle halves. They will have bigger faceup area than round and at lower cost.

I think he wants a round, and ideal cut rounds face up larger than a lot of fancy cuts!

One of the best ways to determine light performance is to become familiar with the IS images and what to look for in top-tier cuts. Here is a great reference page:

Hi John and welcome!

That's a shame the diamond you were interested in sold, but it wasn't the one, your stone is out there! As DS mentions, WF sell great diamonds so it would be very difficult to go wrong. In regards to evaluating IS images, the diamonds sold at WF that are in house are all going to have excellent IS images and once you get to that level you aren't really going to see any light leakage or much at all in fact as all of their in house stones are carefully selected for the best possible performance within their range. If you check out Brian ( Hawk's) link, you will be able to get a much better idea how the images work.

I will take a look to see what I can find that might be suitable for you from WF, are you open to considering other vendors if needed or do you prefer to work with WF exclusively?

Hi John,

Here are a couple of suggestions based on your criteria, we have branded h&a A Cut Above and some Expert Selection. You might be aware if you wished you could get a slightly bigger diamond if you considered lowering the clarity to SI if verified eye clean but that's a personal choice, if you prefer VS then by all means do so!

Thanks all for the great suggestions. Would someone be able to see the difference in color between an H diamond and an I diamond side by side given everything else is the same? Both in solitaire settings.

I guess it depends on who the 'someone' was. :D Both H and I fall in the 'near colorless' range in terms of GIA grading - here is a great article which helps define the difference in color.

As Hawk says, that depends who * someone* was....But I am going to say for the vast majority viewing set stones in the size you are considering, that are GIA or AGS graded, even with direct comparison, my answer will be a no.
