Dearest colored stone lovers - I need your help! I just decided to get a gift for my favorite aunt and would like to give it to her at our family reunion on 10/20. She adores amethyst but I know nothing about it. This is unlike me to wait until the last minute, so unfortunately I do not have time to buy a stone and have it set but rather need a preset piece.

I like the looks of the Rainbow Sliding Halo pendant from Daniel M on Etsy:

I know many people love his work. How are the quality of his stones? Do you have any other suggestions for a pendant or earrings? I'd like to stay under $250. I would describe her taste as traditional meets funky. (I however am sadly un-funky so I probably wouldn't go for anything too out there!).

Any help would be much appreciated!! I would like to purchase on Friday if possible to give time for it to arrive.

I like both. :)
I guess it just depends whether she likes smaller more subtle pieces like the first, or if she would prefer more of a bold necklace like the second.

Thank you. I'm thinking bold is the way to go!

You are very likely to get just "regular" amethyst. If you had more time, you should look into Jackson Crossroad amethyst where it isn't just a one dimensional purple, but has the most amazing blue flash as well. There's also African amethyst reminiscent of the old Siberian material where it has red flash in addition to the purple body colour.

( meant to ad with with the Chrono quote) Of course it would be ideal to be able to choose a stone first and have it set but I don't think with a little over a week it's possible :(

I like gemstone beads too, and bold is always fun!

Yes sadly I'll have to go with regular amethyst this time but you've intrigued me and I look forward to someday seeing these finer varieties. Sounds magical! Thanks for the insight.

I too have always been drawn to gemstone beads (one of my dream pieces would be a very fine opal bead necklace - gives me chills just thinking of it!). Thank you for your encouragement. :wavey:

For "regular" amethysts (does she know the difference?), I like the amethyst bead necklace -- if she wears that color & wears necklaces, it ought to please her like crazy. Also think Chel's Ruby Lane suggestion is good -- especially the amethyst & jadeite pendant; it's unique & pretty. You are a nice niece!!

Thank you, Laurie. I'm certain she will not know the difference in amethyst. While she loves jewelry all of her pieces except her gold wedding band are costume pieces. I think this may be one of the most luxurious pieces she has. I'm very tempted to go with the beads because if I were to get her a finer quality faceted amethyst in the future it would be different enough. I really appreciate your opinions!

since she is "artsy" it is definitely the beads.
