Dear Pricescopers

This is my first post and I''m truly impressed with the wealth of knowledge available here. I have what I considered reasonable knowledge about diamonds but you have put me to shame! I have no clue about depth/table size ratios and the other calculations that are referred to on this forum.

My diamond has already been purchased, for what I believe is a good price as a family member bought it wholesale for us, but I would be grateful if you could help me to assess it nevertheless. I do not know how you calculate ''performance'' (or indeed what performance is) so any information you can give me would be most appreciated. I tried to key in the info into the front page but it yielded no results. Don''t worry about saying negative things just because I already own the stone - please be honest.

Also, what does cushion brilliant mean as opposed to modified brilliant? Which is used for the Tiffany Novo? Is the spread ok?

Stats (GIA):

Cushion Brilliant
8.64 x 7.32 x 5.03. mm
Carat weight: 2.23
Colour: D
Clarity: VVS2
Total depth: 68.7%
Table size: 62%
Girdle: Medium to Extremely Thick, Faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: Medium Blue
Comments: surface graining is not shown

Many many thanks in advance for your help!

Someone else with more experience will jump in, but I advise you take it to a reputable jeweler to get an official appraisal.

Thanks so much to those who have replied so far - I appreciate it. I will definitely appraise it for insurance purposes, I was just wondering what people thought of the stats as I am so clueless about whether the cut is ok. Thanks again! The site is really helpful.

Thinking about it, why would fluorescence reduce the value/performance of a D stone? Does fluorescence affect ''lighter'' stones than darker ones? Thanks.

It affects whiter stones more because it will add a bluish tint that you won't notice as much in a yellower stone.

It's also almost impossible to judge a cushion by the stats alone. If you go on GOG's website, Jon has a video with 3 or 4 stones that are all very similar in stats and dimensions, yet vary by price from $20,000 to over $40,000.

Edited to add link to GOG's video - http://www.vimeo.com/4666251

Hi London. Although more information would help in determining your stone (such as crown height, pavilion depth and light return images such as Idealscope and ASET images), in all likelihood it has a "very good" cut, along with outstanding color and clarity. Medium fluorescence would have no detrimental effect on it''s visual appearance.

In all probability it''s a beauty. How''s it look to your eye?

I second Rich- and also want to know, how''s it look to the eye!

I''ve seen a lot of absolutely gorgeous D colors with Medium to Strong Blue.
I was trained by Harry Winston in the ''70''s. At that time a stone like yours was called a "Premier" and actually commanded higher prices.

Today, due to a large number of factors- none of which really having to do with how your stone probably looks - can decrease the selling price of a fluorescent D color by as much as 15%

1) These numbers look great for this type of stone.
2) D colour with Medium or Strong Fluroescence was referred to at one time as Blue White Diamonds and were highly sought after as being the clearest and iciest of all diamonds.
3) I'd love to see a picture or two of this baby, one in natural sunlight and another under a black light. I would have whatever appraiser you hire to do the insurance and replacement value assessment take a microscope picture, IS image and ASET image. If they don't have the equipment and setup find another appraiser! I was disappointed with the lack of equipment in my appraiser's office.
4) If you want to post them here I can tell you about the type of Cushion Brilliant this is and its optical performance properties. Enjoy the diamond it sounds on paper like a beauty! You should decide if you want the appraiser to value the stone at your cost or general retail replacement value. If you plan on insuring it you will have a choice to make.

Regards,
CCL

So many helpful replies! Thank you all SO very much! I''m so glad it looks good on paper.

I saw it once about two weeks ago and it looked very sparkly but it was loose and it''s harder for me to be sure about loose diamonds, becaue it''s harder to see them head-on, if that makes sense. But it was pretty!

Today I''m going to have my finger sized and the mounter will finish the shank, so in a few days I will have the whole ring and I''ll take photos and post them on here. Thanks for offering to help me figure out what kind of cushion it is, CCL! I must sound so clueless!

Going check that video out now. I had no idea cushions were so hard to gauge...

Thanks again and I''ll be back soon with photos!

Get your appraisal done BEFORE the diamond is set. Make sure it is an independant appraiser in no way connected to the seller. After it is set it will be much harder to rate the stone.

Ditto Rich. Also here is the appraiser tool so you can find one in your area.

no pictures??

I will definitely post a picture as soon as I can! I couldn''t go and look at it again today as I got held up at work, but I definitely will.

Thanks so much for the tips re. appraisals. I didn''t know much about this as my family member was like ''I know how much it''s worth'' etc. and is more on the informal side about these things. I''m not complaining - he got us an amazing deal I think (about £13500).

I think we will insure it for the higher value as i don''t think we could easily replace it at the price we paid but, not being an expert, I may be wrong. In any case we don''t want the hassle.

You are all fantastic, thank you!

PHOTOS!

Thanks for all your help. I promised photos, and here they are. Note that the diamond is sitting on the unpolished and unset cast. The sidestones aren''t in and it looks rough. The diamond has not been set - it is literally ''sitting'' on the 4 prongs (unevenly at times).
But it gives an idea! I love my stone - it sparkles and sparkles! Yay!

I had trouble posting photos straight onto here, but follow the link please!
