Hi

We just bought a diamond for US$8,400 with the following specs certified by GIA:
carat weight: 1.15 carat
Color: G
Clarity: VVS2
Cut/Polish/Symmetry: all graded Excellent
Total Depth: 62.4%
Table Size: 57%
Crown Angle: 35.0 degree
Crown Height: 15.0%
Pavilion Angle: 41.2 degree
Pavilion Dept: 43.5%
Star length: 50%
lower half: 80%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly thick, faceted (3.5%)
Cutlet: none

The diameter of the stone is 6.68-6.72 x 4.18 mm

Please could you give us your comments on the stone? It's not as sparkly as we would have liked and were wondering if we've paid a fair price for it.

Thanks so very much!

Welcome!

Can you return it? The diamond is what we call a steep deep with the angles, it is possible it will leak light and as you are noticing, not sparkle as well as it could.

Did you buy it online or from a store? This can also affect price, and did the price include the setting or just the diamond? Online prices for similar diamonds without setting appear to be from around $7700 to $9800 thereabouts.

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the advice. We had been having second thoughts ever since we bought the diamond and its reassuring that some of the people here concurred. And yes, we''ve returned the diamond.. We bought it from a diamond dealer and he''s willing to source for a diamond of our desired proportions.

Could anyone recommend a tight range of dimensions that would likely result in a good looking diamond? Our budget''s about US 8,000-8,500 and preferably something above 1 carat. Proportions that would look good in say a F/G/H colour, VS1/VS2.

Not too sure if we''ll definitely buy a diamond from him anymore but barring our source, we think the next best bet would be buying online. We''ve seen some really good looking diamonds at some of the recommended sites here and would probably buy them in a snap if we could look at them first. Problem is, we''re overseas and would prefer to look at the diamond before buying. So we thought we would see if our source could find us a couple more diamonds that were better.

Once again, thanks very much you guys. The help''s much appreciated.

I will post some numbers you can use as a guide. Whereabouts are you? Maybe we could suggest some places you could try.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

From expert John Pollard.

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

Thanks Lorelei. That''s great help.

We are residing in singapore and in general the places that stock the really good diamonds here are pretty upmarket brick & mortar shops that charge a significant premium over equivalent stones online.

So if our guy cant find anything nice at a decent price, we just might end up buying online at one of the recommended shops here.

Actually we''ve got our eye on a couple of stones from GOG but we''ll see how it goes.

Check out this Singapore based online store.

http://www.vivodiamonds.com/hearts.shtml

Their signature stones are H&A AGS0. They use to provide ASET, IS and Hearts images on these online but not now, maybe they still can on request.
