I need information and suggestions on which platinum alloy to use for my set of custom rings. I know pt900 is preferred by those of the forum but my questions is, In a 3/4 eternity band is it worth changing from the pt950. I ask this because there wont be much metal showing on the more visible parts of the rings. So things like patina and scratches I don't feel will be that visible.

I, personally, would always prefer the two harder alloys, 90plat/10iridium or 95plat/5ruthenium as long as I had a choice. All of the best ringmakers here use one or the other of those two.

Some prefer 900/Ir. There are other alloys others might prefer - the 950/Ru DS mentioned, Co... Here's a short review article: https://www.pricescope.com/journal/overview_common_alloys_used_jewelry

I suppose for me it'd depend on the exact price difference, but I personally would err strongly against 950/Ir - the patina is quick and inescapable, and I detest patina.

I will just add that Vatche did the 90/10iridium at no extra charge. So there shouldn't be much of a price difference, if any. Of course, if they are ordering a stock setting and just setting the diamonds, you may not have a choice.

Rings are coming from whiteflash i will find out tomorrow if its an option or not. I have seen ppl both say whiteflash gives option and ppl say they only do pt950i

Yes, ask them directly.

As DS said, 90plat/10iridium or 95plat/5ruthenium. I don't even remember what combos my rings have as it is pretty much the same to me. I have heard T&CO uses 95plat/5ruthenium.

It will depend on what the item is and whether the setting supplier offers it in other alloys unless they are making the setting themselves. I asked for a specific wg alloy for my huggie hoops from WF and paid a little extra to get it. I didn't want platinum for those because someone else said they thought they were too heavy.

Got response from WF today and they do offer PT900I and PT950R, I requested pricing information for both for my custom rings.

Can any one help me find the thread about the color differences between the two?

I am going to tell you that you simply aren't going to see enough of a color difference to worry about it. I have rings made out of both and it has never crossed my mind to think they aren't the same color. Let's just say they are close enough to wear a band of each next to each other! I am hoping the cost is the same, but I'd go with the lower priced one if there is an extra charge.

Costs $150 extra for either mix, is it worth it?

Yes, I would do it. I paid something like that to change 18k wg from nickel alloy to palladium, so I definitely would pay for the harder platinum!

I might leave it up to their ring maker as to which might be better for the specific setting you are getting.

Im thinking that I will leave it at PT950I as I am already over budget for this ring set, I started with a initial budget of 3500, now at 5390 before changing metals, going to PT900 would put me at 5690. As I said in another post I already feel the wedding set is to expensive for my center stone. Ill have to read some more stories and sleep on it as I think I have till tomorrow to decided

Let's talk about this then. The e-ring and wedding band are at $5690 not including the e-ring diamond? What size is the e-ring diamond and what size diamonds are you thinking for the 3/4 eternity?

I hate to ask you this, but why is the diamond on the way to David Atlas?

appraisal / verification

Gosh, that is a waste of money that could have paid for your better alloy!! You don't need to do that with an ACA! Is it too late to stop it?

Yeah I felt it was a waste too but I wanted a professional experienced opinion on the I color of the stone and he does the appraisal of the set stone afterwards and I really wanted that done being its a custom ring and want to see if what I paid is what the setting and band is worth.

Altered my plans and decided to go with the PT900Ir . To offset the cost I decided to not insure the rings for her and make her insure it her self. Wasnt my original plan but Im way over budget hopefully she wont might getting a gift that she has to pay money for

I think that is a good solution! Just make sure she calls and insures the rings the day you give them to her (or day after!).

What are you going to do if he says the stone is low I color or even J? Appraisers can differ from the lab grade by 1 with no accusation of wrong grading, so I am not sure this step was needed. I think the appraisal after is fine if you have to have it for insurance, but I would make sure they know what you paid so they won't over-value the ring(s). That just results in inflated insurance premiums.
