Hi everyone,

Can anyone post pictures of their platinum rings, e-ring and or bands? I am wondering how they wear and how they look after a few years? I know they get darker but I am not sure how dark and how it looks with a diamond in it? Also how often do you need to take it to have it shined back up, or if you do that at all?

Metals confuse me, I like the weight of platinum and most stores around here only carry 14k rings. They all say 18k isn't good because it's so soft. I have a friend that has 18k and she hasn't had any problems with it. So I feel like the stores aren't being honest with me.
Also is the 18k heavy like the platinum?

Thanks

Rhodium is part of the platinum group of metals, and rhodium plating is commonly used to keep platinum bright. I've had my rhodium plated rings for 19+ years and they haven't grayed even though I'm sure the plating has worn off over time. There's been no change in the color of the metal, which you might see when gold plating wears off. I have an 18 kt white gold band that I wear with the platinum rings and comparatively, it looks less white than the others.

My platinum rings remain shiny, bright and white because I only wear them a few hours per day, just at the office only. The reason for the darkness (patina) is due to the very small buildup up of fine scratches from normal wear and tear. All it takes to make them shiny again is to have it repolished professionally. The nice thing about platinum is that repolishing does not remove any material over time. How long it takes for the patina to build up depends on how tough you are with your rings. How often you take it in for a repolishing is up to you. I've had my platinum rings for at least 5 years without the need for touch ups but I'm very gentle on my rings as well.

18k WG is fine as long as it isn't studded with diamonds all over the place. 14k WG and 18k WG are really yellow gold mixed with other alloys to make it less yellow. They require rhodium plating to look white and shiny. Without the plating, they will look a touch tinted. Gold is less dense than platinum, and so will always be lighter.
