I saw where someone here had looked on overstock.com for rings. I was checking some of them out, and I saw several platinum rings with CZ stones. I didn''t know someone would actually buy such a thing. Why in the world are they putting CZ''s in platinum???

on another note...

I know platinum is rare, but am I really going to pay upwards of $400-$500 for the band alone? I have been looking everywhere and it doesn''t get much cheaper than that....

The CZ''s are just placeholders. Many nice jewelers do it too, until a customer comes to buy a diamond and then they swap it out.

As for platinum, yes it is very expensive right now. What exactly are you looking for? We''re good bargain hunters here and can try to help you if you tell us what you are looking for.

I went to a jeweler and all of her rings had cz''s in it for place holders. Some of the big chains do this as well. That way, you can see what the ring looks like with a "diamond in it" and pick out exactly the stone you want.

The place holder thing makes sense. That way they dont have so much money in one spot maybe???

Well, I have posted several posts kind of asking questions around the idea. I want to get my girlfriend an engagement ring. I want it to be platinum cause I think she deserves the best. We have already been through discussions and I know what she wants, so when I say "I want", I''m referring to what she wants.

I want a platinum ring with a 3 stone setup. The middle needs to be at least .5ct and the side stones need to be whatever is proportional. Thats about it. Nothing fance really or nothing that is very rare, just a good looking ring.

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS: I see that there are a lot of diamond enthusiasts here and people that love "nice and rare" diamonds. We do not particularly have to have the best of the best. Color can be mediocre and clarity can be mediocre. It is okay in my book to cut a couple of corners to get the price down. She doesn''t mind at all. Bottom line is, I really don''t have a fraction of the money it''s going to cost to get one of these rings, but I will break my back to get her the best that I can. If I can find a very good deal on something like I mentioned above, I''ll prolly go for it. I am not going to jump on something though unless it is very close to what I specified. I know its not that specific, but you get my drift

thanks!

--forgot to add that the stones need to be princess cut.

Can you tell us what your budget is, for the setting and for the diamond?

HI:

For continuity, it is easier for readers if you keep posting on your own (same) thread: here are your others for reference sake....

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/two-questions.74721/

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/e-ring.74745/

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/need-advice.74702/

I did a quick search the other night looking for stones that might fit your "earlier descriptions" (need advice thread) and was not very successful; so what I might suggest is that you stick with one vendor and ask him to locate stones for you in say colors that are in the J/K/L range, (I think you mentioned that M as the lowest you would go), and S12 and I1 clarity.

BTW, have you given up the idea of using your Pawn Shop connection?

cheers--Sharon

Is it really necessary to have platinum? You want her to have the best, but would sacrifice the diamond quality for a platinum setting. I would suggest finding the best quality diamonds for your budget and go with a white gold setting.

WF can do it for $2400 before the PS discount (which on ES stones isn't much) or $2550 for a much better stone. I don't know for certain that that would include 0.25 ct side stones; for that you'd have call/email them.

0.5 J si1 ES may or may not be eye-clean.

0.53 ACA princess. $150 gets you a larger eye-clean stone with much much better light performance (even if you're not into that). With the PS discount on ACA's the stone comes to about $800.

ETA: signedpieces.com also does a princess 3-stone in platinum. You have to call for pricing.

Bluenile.com also has a princess 3-stone stock setting. The 0.25 tcw setting is $1500, the 0.5 tcw (which I think is what you wanted, right? 0.25/side stone?) is $2250. Those prices are just for the setting alone. Are you sure you want such large side stones?

I''m probably going to go the Overstock CZ route, you can''t beat it if you find a style you like. You get a great setting for low money, you get a 30 day return policy if your girl isn''t crazy about the setting, and you can surprise her with a finished ring ... and both of you can explore getting the diamond at a later date.

The only problem I''m having is that the ring I''m looking for is fitted for 7MM, and I was hoping to get a 6.5MM. The prongs look long, so I''m hoping there is some size flexibility there ... anyone?

I agree with the above. If you are willing to make sacrifices it would be better sacrificed in the metal rather than the stones.

You say that you want her to have "the best" but the part of the ring that REALLY matters are the diamonds! Get the better diamonds and go down to white gold if money is an issue. If she''s not fussy, she''ll be fine with that. Poor quality diamonds really really don''t look nice. :-/

I don''t know why I am so opposed to white gold, but something threw me off about it. I think I read somewhere or heard someone say that white gold was an aweful example of a metal to use for a ring. Probably dumb reasons to shoot it down...

When you guys say a "setting" are you referring to the ring as a whole without stones?

How come I never see rings, especially diamond rings, with sterling silver bands?

Yup. Setting is just the ring, or just the ring and sidestones. For instance, this setting is a steal, but requires a 1ct center stone.

It was actually quite common to set diamonds in silver in the 20''s and 30''s. My understanding is that silver is not quite as hard as gold and therefore less secure for setting stones. Platinum is harder still to the point that platinum doesn''t wear off, it deforms. If a platinum ring is dented, a jeweler just smooshes the platinum around to even out the dent. A similar injury to a gold band is mroe liekly to be filled in with more gold. Make sense?

I don''t think there is anything wrong with getting a white gold setting. Maybe the article you read cautioned about getting white gold prongs as gold white/rose/yellow is malleable.... i don''t know.

I don''t know the answer to your question about silver. sorry.

I would not advise doing that. It might require that you have the head replaced. The ring should come with a head for a 6.5mm stone if that is the size diamond you want.

I would recommend 18k white gold if you have a limited budget.

Yes, a setting is the metal ring and it may have some small stones. You select a center diamond to be set in the setting! Or in the case of a 3 stone, you might select all three, unless you find a setting that has the two smaller side stones.

Sterling silver is not hard enough to set diamonds in.
