Is there a really big difference in a 0.9 caret and a 1 caret diamond? I know my boyfriend is going to propose soon (guilty of going snooping) and he has been given the choice of 0.9 with colour D and vvs2, whatever that means or going for a 1 caret but not as good quality. I've been trying to find images to show the difference. Personally I'll be glad of any ring but just curious

If you know the dimensions you can check on something like this:

http://www.diamdb.com/compare/

Carat is just the weight, some diamonds can be cut 'shallower' which means the height/width of a shallow 0.9 could be bigger than that of a normal 1.0

In any case the size difference in a like for like cut 0.9 vs 1.0 is about 0.1 to 0.2mm (a tenth or two tenths of a milimeter).

The thing is most people like to say 'thats a 1 carat diamond on my/her finger' so the price usually increases a lot at the 1 carat boundary. That's why its sometimes sensible to get a 0.9 or 0.95 with better colour, cut and clarity for the same price as a poor 1.0. Unless you know the specs of both diamonds its pretty hard to say which is actually better.
