Both Violet and Kelpie [sorry it took so long!] have asked me to post some pics of my cavalier, Charlie. He is eight years old and has the wonderful temperament that cavaliers have. They are sweet companions and it makes you happy just to be around them. Charlies coloring is called Blenheim, which is chestnut and white.

You ladies are definitely selling me more and more on this breed! How precious!

Charlie loves cats. When we got him, we already had two cats. Sadly, they both passed away this year. We brought a Maine Coon Cat kitten into our home in the beginning of August. It took several days for things to quiet down, but now they are best friends :))
Cavaliers need to be treated gently, so that is also something to keep in mind. I love this breed and recommend them highly. The breeders are very cautious with these pups and will have a lot of questions for prospective buyers ;))

OOOOh Marian, he is gorgeous!!!

My DD Sara (4 3/4's lol), who is currently suffering from chicken pox ( as well as a disturbed sleeping routine, it's 10.30 here in the UK!) just said, Mum we NEED HIM!!!!!!

Guess what is going to be on her Santa list when we write it tomorrow!!!

Give him and kitty a big squeezy hug from us!!! :wavey:

oh i love a dog-loves-cat-loves-dog photo!

it melts my heart it does

Re: Photos of my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie Brow

He's so handsome Marian! He and Chicken look a lot alike, tho she's very anxious and spastic, not something I expected from the breed, but it certainly doesn't change my opinion of the breed. (just puts about 9 exclamation points on the reasons for what happens when you don't buy from a good breeder) Regardless, they are such elegant and beautiful dogs!

How did he come by his name?

Thank you, Sharon! All of the cats loved to have their ears groomed. When he finished one ear, they turned their heads to have the other ear done :)) Liza is just getting used to the routine, but she is handling it like a trooper.

Thank you, Packy! My breeder had a "Brown" litter. She named them Jackson Brown, Murphy Brown and Charlie Brown. They were all Blenheims. She said we could change his name, but we loved the one she gave him.

I would like to talk further with you about Chicken. What do you mean by spastic? Yes, buying from a good breeder is essential. Some friends of ours did not, with very sad consequences.

Re: Photos of my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie Brow

He's adorable! King Charleses always look like they know a secret & think you're dumb that you don't.

Bet you enjoy agility & so does he. We had several of them in our agility classes at the Obedience Club I belonged to outside NYC. They were terrific -- so intelligent & perceptive. Because of that, it must be a bit of a challenge to keep them from being bored. One of our members had about every possible domestic & int'l agility title on her KC & began doing dog dancing with him; that was really neat.

Big smooch for him & kitty-cat!

risingsun, you're dog is beyond adorable. just from looking at the pictures of this breed, i think it is why dogs are called "(wo)man's best friend"---they just seem so loving & sweet. thanks for sharing your photos!

Re: Photos of my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie Brow

Cavaliers are great dogs, I did a bunch of breed research, and they have excellent temperament and love everybody, human and animal. We were seriously considering a Cavalier, but ended up with a papillon instead. Interestingly, Papillons and Cavaliers are in the same breed family of Spaniels (papillons used to be called french spaniels).

I met a few of the little guys (Cavaliers) at different breeders, and they are just cheerful and happy.

Bouncy, easy-going and with big soulful eyes, you have a great dog there, risingsun, he looks like a real sweetie! :appl:

:wavey: I'd like to encourage anyone that wants to rescue a Cavalier to contact http://www.cavalierrescueusa.org/ or use Petfinder.com. To find a reputable breeder for any type of dog, please contact the breed's club, they can provide references. For cavaliers it's http://www.ckcsc.org/

He is so precious. I showed him to my husband. He said, "That's a whopping cat."

 I love him

DH and I have an 8 year old pug and we're seriously considering a Cavalier upon her passing (which could be years from now). They seem like such good family dogs and your Charlie melts my heart

Re: Photos of my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie Brow

OMG! rising sun - Charlie Brown is PERFECT! he really has the perfect head shape and face for a cav. I love that he loves your kitties (mine HATES cats) and agility is something i ALWAYS wanted to do with Rip. His breeder did agility with his mom, and their border collie -- we don't have a big backyard for that, but i LOVE seeing the pics of him flying through the ring, ears out and so happy on his face.

Yours has a beautiful coat too - what kind of maintenence do you have with him? We've cut Rip's hair each summer because he goes to the beach and goes swimming every day, and it just gets so messy. But admittedly, he and his grandmother both have extremely thick and slightly curly coats - Charlie's looks much more like the ideal.

Thank you for sharing his photos - the Cavs just melt my heart. i hope to someday own one in every color :)

edit: Rip came from MD - and i did a ton of research before i got him so i could find a breeder who was advancing the line and well being of the breed. sounds like you did too! Where did Charlie Brown come from? When i went to meet Rip as a baby, his great great grandmother was 15!!!! that's like 100 in cavalier dog years!

Re: Photos of my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie Brow

Thank you so much for your comments, JewelFreak, lulu, iLander, Tuckins, Imdanny, Pink Tower, DivaDiamond and Violet :))

JewelFreak~ We did both obedience and agility with Charlie. I developed some health problems and had to stop. We had a great time in these classes. We would be there in the heat of summer and in the freezing winter weather. Charlie was always so excited when he realized where we were taking him!

lulu~ Charlie is a sweet tempered dog. He can be a bit silly and is always very loving.

iLander~ Your dog is adorable, too. You did a lot of research on the breed. I suggest anyone considering a cavalier [or any pure bred dog] to do the same. There are two parent clubs who have referral services. Why there are two parent clubs is beyond the scope of this post. Talk about canine politics... ;)) You can also go to the AKC website and navigate your way to their parent club.

Tuckings, Imdanny, PinkTower and DivaDiamond~ Thank you for your kind words. Cavaliers are a wonderful breed. PT, please inform Mr. PT that Charlie is not a large cat

I think Charlie is a good representative of the breed, too, violet. We did set up an agility room in our house, but there really wasn't enough room for more than practicing specific elements of the course.

Charlie's coat tends to curl a bit over his hips. We use grooming products to straighten them out. The rest of him is not curly. Sometimes we bathe him and other times he goes to the groomer. She cleans up his slippers. We can't have him walking around with three inch slippers! I like to keep him as close to the breed standard as possible, but we do have him trimmed up a bit. We do most of the grooming ourselves. I know how I want him to look and I can usually get him there. I use Petsilk products, for the most part. I also use Eye Envy for tear stains.

We got Charlie from a breeder in north central Virginia. She was very active in breeding for health, temperament and conformation. She showed her dogs and had a good number of champions. Her mother was a breeder and an AKC judge. Both were very knowledgeable about the breed.

I don't know if we will have more than one cavalier at a time. Charlie and Liza make a happy couple

I am glad you enjoyed my pics. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Re: Photos of my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie Brow

Ohhh my word. I had this huge reply to you and lost all of it! :knockout: Maybe that was a hint that nobody wanted to read the entire saga. I guess I'll try to sum it up eh?

Chicken doesn't come from a reputable breeder, I'd consider it a backyard breeder place. She has issues, and the vet feels they are behavioral, and I don't know how to fix them. One of the issues actually is a product of her breeding-she walks funny, like she's got a cob stuck. JD thinks it's the breed but I'm quite certain that wasn't in any of the breed info I read-and I spent a good year/year and a half obsessively checking into the breed so I would think I'd have caught it.

So, I've had 5 years of frustration and some crying, and almost taking her to the vet to be put down, and considering rehoming her..and then as soon as I've made a decision, seems like I'll go to the door to call her in and she'll come running down the walk, tail in the air, doing the Cavalier smile..and I can't get past the fact that I love the dog.

JD isn't impressed w/the breed at all, and I'm still positive and adamant that our experiences are not the norm for this breed, not what we would have experienced had we spent the money and gotten a puppy from the breeder I wanted in the first place, or one of her retired and already trained adults, but rather our experiences are a result of bad breeding.

I've decided that when the time comes, the next Cavalier will be from the breeder I wanted in the beginning, if she'll still let us have one of the retired adults.

We shave Chicken a few times a year. Partly it started b/c of her peeing issues, and it was easier to keep her clean w/no fur.

The spastic thing..I guess it's like, when the kids go outside, she freaks out and wants so badly to play w/them, but she gets scared and runs away if they try. After a while they just quit trying to play w/her at all. She trembles a lot and does this low flat dog thing, practically spread eagle she's so submissive. I feel so bad for her-it's like she's not even a dog at all and it doesn't seem like much of a life for her.

ETA, wow, kind of a long sum up ha! I forgot to add that I like the story of how he got his name-so cute!
