Good morning. I was hoping someone out there could tell me their opinion on this stone I found on the internet. I am having it set in 14K yellow gold, so I''m hoping J colour will still be good.

3.01 carats J VS2
EGL
depth 69.2%
table 67%
girdle medium, polished
culet none
polish very good
symmetry very good
fluorescence none
crown height 9%
pavilion depth 56%
graining nil
8.23 x 7.88 x 5.45 (1.04:1.00)
$13,000

Cert. is dated July of 2003 - is that a problem? In the comments section it says "Diascript in the girdle". Does this mean it is laser inscribed or what does that mean? There is a tiny inclusion (looks like a speck and there is no description underneath) on the table pictured on the certificate.

Is this diamond square enough - I know it falls in the 1.05 ratio, but would you notice that it''s not exactly square. I am thinking of turning the diamond so it looks like a diamond shape, so want to make sure it looks square. I cannot go to look at the diamond as it is far away.

Help!!

Have you purchased this stone already?

Price sounds almost too good to be true!

No.

With that price and the fact that it's an EGL stone, I'd get it independently appraised to make sure that it's actually a J/VS2 and not a K/SI1 or worse. Is it an EGL USA cert? That would make me feel better. The numbers on your stone sound AMAZING which is why your price seems very sketchy. Are you getting this through someone who can get this for you at absolute wholesale? EGL is cheaper than GIA, but this is so much less than my stone (which is a triple VH on the BScope and 3.25 ct) that I worry. You may be getting a great deal though! As for the date on the cert, there's no problem. And, as far as I know, Diascript does mean the diamond is inscribed. Do you know if this diamond was previously set?

It is EGL European. I talked to the vendor who seems to be very reputable(through research on this site) and he agrees it is a VS2 and a J, possibly a weak J. He says the stone looks fantastic and that they recently dropped the price. It would be putting it in yellow gold with VS1 I baguettes and possibly VS1-2 I round brilliants. Everything sounds great - I just don't know about the colour? Would a J look worse in a larger stone as compared to a 1 carat?

Large stones do tend to show their color more. I was VERY hesitant getting my stone, but it has such an amazing cut that it doesn't look yellow at all (in fact, stones in the mall that were graded "G" (and set in platinum) looked more yellow than mine because of their poor cut. You stone will not be that icy white, but if you don't mind the warmer color in your stone and you set it in yellow gold, you should be fine!

Thanks for the info. I don't think you ever said what colour your stone is? I was just wondering...

Opinions on another stone if anyone wishes to help:

2.86 carats J VS1
GIA
depth 73.9
table 73
girdle thin to slightly thick
no culet
no fluor.
excellent polish very good symmetry
crown height 9.50%
7.92 x 7.69 x 5.68 (1.3:1.00)
$12,700

Come on someone tell me what they think? I need an expert's opinion.

that ain't me! But I'll reply anyway...the fact that the vendor told you that they recently dropped the price sounds like a used car tactic...but anyhoo- I would not trust that European cert...make sure you can NOT only get an exchange but ALSO a refund if the stone comes back from an indep. appraiser as lower...I bet you ten bucks it will....the first one otherwise looks decent , as does the second...the second actually seems a little nicer to me despite it's large table...at least you can pretty much bet it will be an actual J...

And researcher has the most beautiful "I" in the world!

I like this one the best- and b/c it's an EGL, you could easily ascertain the crown info...despite table being larger than depth, it could be very nice...my 2 cents

Thanks for your advice. My Mum has a 1 carat which was appraised by the vendor who sold it to her as a "J". After setting it in the ring, 3 more appraisals were done and two came back as "G" and one as "G-H". So maybe the theory of the stone looking like a better colour once set is correct?

Thanks for the kudos, MMM! Today I had someone ask how my guy could possibly afford a "D" in my size! It was so great!!! I have no idea how I lucked into such a white "I", but I'm not going to question it too much!

As for your diamond choices, I too would go with the 2nd stone. I know it's hard to drop in size (I had REALLY wanted this 3.65 ct), but for the most part you really do get what you pay for. You have to remember that a "J" is already going to show a little yellow, and even if it is a true "J" it can be on the borderline between an "I" and "J" or "J" and "K". GIA will grade these borderline stones as lower, EGL as higher. For that reason alone I would go for the GIA. But, it's up to you. Can you call both stones in to your local appraiser and view them side by side? It may cost you $50, but it would be so worth it!!!

Thanks for the comments. But the first stone is so much better overall, it is only the COLOUR!!!!!! Sorry, I'm getting frustrated. No, I cannot call the stones in - they are from the same vendor & I would have to buy both of them. I am in Canada, so everything is difficult from here. We have to pay 10% excise tax and then 14 1/2% sales tax on the converted amount (which today is at 1.37). The same stone here would be anywhere from $44,000 and up. I have been quoted as high as $60,000 for a 2 carat and not top quality either. You Americans are very lucky with your prices. For the EGL one -with the U.S. to Cdn. exchange, I can probably get it for about $17,000 or so (without adding the lovely tax).

Still in a quandry...

The numbers honestly look good on both stones. I know you like that the 1st will face up bigger (and IS bigger), but it's about 50/50 which one will be the best performer (in fact, my appraiser says he prefers princess stones in the low to mid 70's over those in the 60's). Can you have the stones sent to an appraiser in the US before purchasing? I just don't like the fact that you would have to buy both before they'll be sent to someone. You might want to see if these are list diamonds, and if so, see if another vendor like White Flash who will send them to you can call them in. I just worry that you'll get a raw deal with the EGL stone. There were even some GIA "J" stones that looked too yellow to me, and I went with an "I"! Can you at least get some digital photos of the stones sent to you? Do you have ideal scope images? Those things would definitely help you make a decision

Hi,

NO - I asked the vendor if he can send them to an appraiser in the States first and he said he used to do that but the appraiser was no good and took too long etc. etc. He said I could buy the 3 carat one and get it appraised here in Canada and then send it back if I am not happy, but then I have to pay for shipping twice (which will be about $125 CDN) and Gawd knows how the 24.5% tax works if I return the stone, will the Government still charge me anyway? Ha Ha. I know the vendor has the 3 carat one because he had it in front of him and verified it was indeed a VS2 therefore he agreed with the EGL and said he agreed it was a J, although possibly a weak one. I think he may have the other stone in his possession too, they are closed now so I can't check. I asked for photos of the first one, but he said that you can't tell anything from the computer. According to this site and the Better Business Bureau, they are a very reputable company.

It's not, for me, a matter of not trusting the company, but their word on what will face up white and whether inclusions are visible (I just meant you might want a second opinion, or to find a company that would work with you a little better). Is there a way to purchase the 3 ct stone and have it sent straight to an appraiser of your choice to have it checked out (and possibly returned) if need be? That would keep the shipping costs down. No matter what you decide, it sounds as though the 3 ct is calling to you. Even though the pictures of the two stones may not help a ton, I would still ask for them. I would also have them send the ideal scope images so you can see for yourself which one has the most potential. When you're talking about spending this much money, they should go out of their way to help you (other vendors will provide you these pictures at no cost).

Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. (I find a lot of people read your messages on this site, but not too many reply - where are all those expert jewellers out there??)

I asked if he could send the stone to an appraiser here and he said no, that he would send it to me (after purchasing of course) and then I could get it appraised myself. Yes, the 3 carat is calling to me, but the only thing not perfectly ideal with the other one is the table (and it still falls under 1B, which is still ideal). The 2.86 is actually a little more square than the 3 carat. I agree with what you say that the GIA J may actually be closer to an I compared to an EGL J. Then, you wonder if the "perfect" stone is still out there waiting... Although I have checked all the so-called "reputable" websites and there is nothing of that clarity (VS2 or VS1) for near that price. I don't think I am going to find the perfect stone here in Vancouver -not for THAT price anyway. Does anyone know what other websites are good and safe for buying loose stones?

I'm getting more anxious by the minute - I can almost see it on my finger!!!!

Hi Researcher's wife,

I think I have decided not to be in such a rush and wait for the better colour. In a perfect world, I think I would like a G, maybe an H, but no lower. I will continue looking on the various websites. If anyone knows of any websites that are especially good, please let me know. I am looking on Whiteflash, Good Old Gold, McGivern's, Abazias and Dirt Cheap Diamonds so far.
Any input would be extremely helpful!!

Well, may I tempt you with this:....I'm dealing with Good Old Gold....I know researcher loves White Flash!....Johnathan told me tonight that this one is back on the market...at least it was earlier today....it's just as big as your 3 carat...it will look whiter...and have awesome light return...!

Just a thought!

Oh my GAWWD! Must investigate immediately! Thanks for the hot tip MOREMOREMORE!!

Listen to MMM! She knows what she's talking about!

Oh, and I don't know what gave you the impression that I'm Researcher's wife, but I'm Researcher and am currently engaged to a boy! LOL

While I would say White Flash and GOG are my two favorites, I would check out diamond brokers of florida (they have some beautiful stones) and Nice Ice (Robin and Todd are great but don't have a big princess stock--they can order them though).

I would still look into the jubilee though--they're gorgeous!

Hi Researcher,

Sorry for some reason I thought I was talking to a man and then I thought you were his wife and has just come home(ha ha). Are the Florida ones the same as buydiamonddirect.com - I think they are on this forum too??

No problem--it's confusing considering I basically picked the stone for my e-ring

It's actually www.dbof.com, and they have the "brilliant fire princess". I don't know about the buydiamonddirect.com company, but I would trust DBOF.

LOL....researcher...I had the same thing happen...I think it's our usernames....

Anyhoo- re: the jubilee, I'd CALL jonathan, not email him b/c I know they get so many emails a day..
