Hello Everyone....

My Mother and I would like to get my lil'' sister a diamond 3 prong pendent for her (upcoming) college graduation. What''s an appropriate size stone??? (.75)??? Color??? Clarity??? Cut???? Is getting an ideal cut (Hearts and Arrows) stone that important for a pendent (especially if it''s less than a carat in total weight)???? As usual, any advice/insight is always appreciated!!!

There has been some discussion about this just the past few days, so you can do a search to see whta people are saying. In general people seem to feel that =/- .5ct is a nice size. .75 would certainly be nice, but probably not required to get a nice looking pendent. You can probably stay just under the .5 size to avoid the price/carat jump at that point. If you go bigger, you can stay just under the .75 size again to avoid that jump. I would stick to a top notch ideal cut to keep the sparkle factor high. If you do that, you can compromise on color and clarity more.

What I'm about to say is sacriledge, I know, but..............

I had an H&A pendant. I loved it, but the diamond didn't sparkle on my neck like it would if I laid it on my finger. When I was upgrading to my ring, I discussed the sparkle factor of my pendant with Brian Gavin at White Flash. He agreed what I was seeing was real. He said the neck is a much more static position than a finger or wrist. A pendant doesn't get the opportunity to roll and play with the light on the neck like a ring or bracelet would. Even earrings get much more light play than a pendant does. Based on my own personal experience, when I do replace my pendant, I plan to get a decently well cut diamond or maybe a nice FIC.

Now everyone can "stone" me. All diamond donations greatly appreciated!!

PQ - that's interesting. I'm getting a solitaire pendant in a couple of months... I hadn't considered the static factor. However, I'm hopeful that it will perform well, as it is one of the best cuts out there

It definitely sparkled, Quaer. Just not like diamonds do in rings. Not as much or with the same intensity. Most of the time it was flashes of white light.

I find your opinion to be of great interest and value. Thanks.

I have a 0.42 RB set as a pendant that does sparkle and fire as PQ said but you don't really get to appreciate it though because it's on your neck and you can only move your neck so much. Still, it is adviseable to get the best cut you can get to maximize the sparkle factor. By best cut, I mean you can get an ideal cut stone that is NOT an H&A. It will still perform but no one will look that close.

Interesting PQ! I hadn't thought ot that. My pendant is on a bar drop, so it does move around a fair amount, and gets lots of light reflections off of it. I can't see it, but others comment on it. I guess it depends on both the stone itself and the setting.

That's a great pendant style Lop!! I've seen those and love them!! Being a bit "dangly", as it were, your diamond would move more than mine did. Mine was the more traditional half-bezel style setting.
