I looked at a .54 carat ideal cut, G color I1 clarity diamond solitaire round pendant today and it looked really good. I was informed by the jeweler that clarity is less important for a pendant than on a ring. Is this true and is I1 an OK grade for a pendant?

Also, I noticed that Blue Nile only offers necklaces with the rabbit ears if using a cable chain. I''ve read that most prefer no rabbit ears. Are there other online places that offer different options. Does anyone like the rabbit ears?

In earrings and pendants the owner, wearer, usually does not stare at the diamond like when it is set into a ring. One can get away with lower clarity, to an extent, in earrings and pendants. A lot of this has to do with the personality of those involved in the transaction. Some people would never want an I1 diamond, while other may prefer to have I1 rather than a better clarity. The price is according to what you prefer, so the budget needs to be considered.

Many pendant have rabbit ear bales. There are open ones and solid styles. Alternatives are tubing, hidden bales, single loops, jump rings....many other choices. The kind of chain makes little difference unless it has design elements which would interfere with a pendant gliding freely.

On a rabbit... yes, sure! Not on a pendant though.

There is no reason to get a pendant with a design you do not like. These settings are quite inexpensive (esp. white gold becomes some mere afterthought compared to the stone's price). As for I1, why not - as long as the inclusions do not turn off the stone's brilliance... and do not show huge and black at reasonable distance.

Anyway, what type of setting & chain would you preffer? Most usual ones can be had out of a catalog by any diamond seller. If this is the case with your style, than all that remains to do is find one diamond you feel good about. There should be no restriction on your choice at all.

Not sure what was the price of the pendant, but you will find H&A G-SI2 stones like that for 1k listed around here. In this, the H&A cut amount for a small premium, if any.

Anyway, there is one important point: is the I1 stone you saw the same that you want to buy? It could be that all VVS stones look just as clean, but not two I1 woudl look reliably alike !

Just had a a new pendant setting re-made. Originally had a large single loop on a 4 prong basket made to avoid the rabbit ears. It didn't work out much better. Back to the drawing board for a semi bezel. Wasted the first setting. Oh well.

Crowing1,
I just reset my pendant last Friday and it looks very much like this. It is set in a 14kt white gold basket with a 1.5mm 16" 18kt yellow gold cable chain (small neck means a shorter chain). I originally had it set with a single bale to avoid the mickey mouse look but it still did not look pretty to my eyes. The picture shows a very simple and generic design that even your local jeweler can do. This style of setting gives the appearance of a floating diamond on your neck. Mine did a super job for less than $170 total (labor and 18kt gold included) in less than one week.

Note: the picture was taken from GOG's website.

It's the second picture.

A front view. I changed my setting a little so that people viewing the pendant cannot see the rings of the bale connecting the chain to the basket setting. It is facing the side instead of facing the viewer.
