Pearl rings modified to be used as a diamond or gem semi-mou

Occasionally in my eBay browsing, I come across a pearl ring that I think would make a nice semi mount for a colored stone. Is this possible? Does it require major modification?

Don't know what designs you've seen on eBay, but imo none of my various pearl rings could be readily modified to accept a gem stone.
