Hi All,

After going through my options and after a lot of google searches, I think that I am leaning towards a pear shaped drop pendant for my mom. @elle_chris showed me a pendant that she had done for her mom and I couldn't stop thinking about it. It's just gorgeous!

I'm leaning towards the follow setting from Stuller (which will also accommodate a round if I find a stone that I love):
https://www.stuller.com/products/bu...mmendationSource=SiteSearch#/mounting-options

This setting from Unique Settings New York:
https://www.uniquesettings.com/products/show/21954

So i'm onto the diamond hunt. I've seen a few diamonds locally where I felt they were not cut very well and very much overpriced. One of the diamonds had a very weirdly square bottom....and with the other the tip looked a bit off.

I wanted to follow up here and ask what I should be looking for when buying a pear. I know that I should look for even facets that all light up, but other than that I've been looking to see what my eye likes under a loupe and about 8 inches away. sometimes they do not agree so well.

One thing that I DO notice is that the tips tend to look more like crushed ice, whereas some bottoms look a bit more like a round where there are nice facet patterns. I'm not sure if that is how ALL pears are cut, or if that is just how the ones that I've looked at are cut. I've also noticed very noticeable dark areas that I assumed were bowties, which one jeweler tried to tell me was a figment of my imagination and that pears don't have bowties? Am I crazy?

I feel like I lean more towards a squatter pear with a fatter bottom. Online I'm liking these:
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/0.70-carat-g-color-si1-clarity-sku-2873879

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/0.67-carat-g-color-si1-clarity-sku-3371554

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/0.61-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-sku-3144326

Maybe i'm barking up the wrong tree for going with a pear. I don't know half of what I should be looking for, and a round would probably be easier to find. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I really like the .7 you have picked out, here is another one that is just a tad but longer and slightly slimmer even thought the carat weight is lower. I prefer whiter pears over even slightly tinted.

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/0.60-carat-e-color-vs2-clarity-sku-3506904

I really like this one but it may be smaller than you are looking for

OOOO i like that .6 ct you found....I'm not a fan of the long teardrop look for the first, though the clarity is great and the color is wonderful. I like a bit of a bubble bum on these...I will e-mail James Allen now about these two and see if I'm able to get an aset.

Thank you KKjohnson!

Well poop, spoke with a JA rep and there is no aset available for the .7 as it is an overseas stone....but I will be getting on for the .6. Fingers crossed it looks nice.

Also I was on the price scope search engine and I saw this:

http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd/9496858...m_medium=referral&utm_campaign=pricescope.com

It does have a aset and ideal scope...but i'm not sure if i'm reading them correctly, butit looks like a lot of leakage...or am I nuts?

That is nice one! It does have light leakage in the bowtie area which isn't uncommon for pear cuts but it does appear to be pretty minimal. I think this would work very well as a pendant

I actually don't like the .70 pear at all. The shape is off. I have a pear and I don't like any hint of wide shoulders or flattish top. Are there ASETs for the other two? It's very hard (for me) to assess light leakage from that video.

Have JA get you an ASET - that's what they did for my moms pear. Also, I wouldn't go too low in color with pears as it starts to show at tip. Unless of course you or mom don't care.

Here's my old thread with ASET images and pear cut info. to give you a better idea. But in truth, you really need to see them for yourself to decide.

If you're in or around the NYC area, you can visit JA, you just need to make an appointment. They're in the diamond district and can easily show you any stones you're interested in.

The other two that i chose did not have asets either, which I think puts my running average at 1 out of 4:(2.

Not sure that I would be able to purchase a pear without the ASET/IS. Especially since I know i will pick this diamond apart once it's in my hand.

This is a very pretty one from DiamondsbyLauren. A K pear may or may not work for you. But, in a pendant, I'm more forgiving. Maybe ask for a video.
http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/ind...d-79ct-k-vs2-pear-brilliant-diamond-gia-r7703

Love this in the video. A little extra chubby.
http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/ind...mond-56ct-j-vvs2-pear-shape-diamond-gia-r6477

I think that the K is a bit too much color for me, I am going to be putting this into 18k gold so I'd like to be a little nugget of white.

The j .56 is quite pretty though. Definitely a contender!

Sounds like I'm taking a run out there on my lunch one day soon. I'm cutting it a bit close on my ordered by november 15 deadline.

This is what I was worried about when changing from a round to a pear, but I just can't seem to find a cute round setting that i'm as in love with. Everyone seems to want to put a ton of melees all over the piece or they're just too fancy for my mommy.

If the pear search gets frustrating, how about an ideal round in this pear-ish setting? https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond-pendants/twist-pendant-14k-yellow-gold-6972y14 It's quite similar to the first one you posted.
Haha OMG....Stuller has the exact same setting...which my brother vetoed. He said it reminded him of a female part.

I am still open to rounds, and have some searches open with round stones in mind, especially if it is a very ideally cut stone.

Here are some resources for you to read over ASET images and fancy cuts

https://beyond4cs.com/2014/12/aset-reference-charts/

https://enchanteddiamonds.com/education/how-to-read-an-aset-image

I would say that is just an average performer and would probably keep looking if you want something really special...A good pear will take awhile to find and its best not to rush

EDIT: but this is just based off the ASET, a diamond could very well be absolutely perfect when you have it in hand

That's what I was reading as well...it looked like a lot of white to me, but i wasn't sure if that is just bc it's a pear or if there was something else going on.

I can't comment on the ASET as seeing lots of green is expected in pears. The white is throwing me off though.

Gonna reiterate what I said earlier too -
since you're in the city (I am too btw, hiya), pick a few stones you're interested on JAs site, have them call them in, and make an appointment to see them. Their gemologist will also be upfront with you about which are the nice and which are meh.

For a setting, you can always put a small disc with your and your brothers initials on it, then set the pear east to west (stationary style so it won't move) on the chain to the left or right of the disc. It would give it a ton of interest.

Or, you can do a hanging pendant with the disc. Here's a pic.
And to add another option, have you looked at Marquise diamonds? :)

I like what elle_chris said! This is probably your best option since you want a pear

Maybe a bit of a crazy idea...how do you feel about colored diamonds?

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...pear-shaped/1.02-carat-i1-clarity-sku-3288009 {not perfect, but the inclusion as the rounded end should be covered with a prong. Its very pretty and a pendant is not really examined as closely}

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...ear-shaped/0.80-carat-vs2-clarity-sku-3054977 {very pretty. Good clarity. Great color}

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...rquise-cut/0.93-carat-si2-clarity-sku-1860072 {very pretty and good light movement. One major inclusion}

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...marquise-cut/0.62-carat-i1-clarity-sku-534593 {pretty shade. great spread. the inclusion may bother you, but I like that they look like little bubbles}

If the bezel had a more creative outline, you could cover that girdle inclusion pretty nicely. With a pear, I love that this kind of bezel gives a heart-like feeling too.

This one also looks promising!!! This one actually got me a little excited, I would ask if they would review it and see if it's eye clean and ask them for an ASET

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD09540000?refTab=DIAMONDS
I am on it! I also have a diamond i'm interested in on EC that I'm hoping for an aset to come in tonight. (does BN do ASETs? I was under the impression that they did not? oh well no time like the present to ask.)

I am LOVING the yellow colored diamonds, but I don't know that my mom would. Again, being her first "real" piece of jewelry I don't know how she would react. But I do like the second stone enough for me to explore it more. Maybe they would be able to pull it for when I go to JA for a visit.

LOL! I can see that, now that you mention it... Fair enough, then!
It was actually a top contender if I found a round that I couldn't pass up. But he ruined it with 6 little words...brothers :???:!

I am thinking of doing that next week. I'm a bit swamped with little things going on this week. I'm a bit disorganized for the upcoming holidays obsessing over this pendant. Took this week to get my butt into gear.

I think that for me I've been seeing a lot of meh-ish pears though, some of it is that a lot of pears are not symmetrical.... which can be a bit off putting. But some just have the wrong dimensions and are so long!

I'd like to also say a quick thank you all for all the time you're spending with me on this. I just know that whatever I end up with will be the best I could find because of everyone's support and hard work being extra pairs of eyes. I can not thank every one enough for the help. There is a bit of emotional journey for me since I think that this is a bit of a defining moment. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I think this one I would need to see in person...there appears to be a little mushiness at the roundest part...I'm compiling a list of stones to call JA about later today to see if they could arrange for me to see them in the showroom.

Also...I think that I'm still a bit interested in the below:

http://www.b2cjewels.com/dd/9496858...m_medium=referral&utm_campaign=pricescope.com

I think that the color is great, the shape is perfect and the ASET and IS are pretty good to my untrained eye. Only problem that I have with it is that it does have strong blue fluorescence...and I don't know how this will show up in terms of cloudiness in the sunlight.

This one is my favorite so far. Love the l:w ratio, very pleasing girdle outline and shape appeal. I have a marquise with strong blue flour that does not show cloudiness in sunlight, but best to ask vendor to take it out in sunlight to view for you.

D-VS1 is delicious as well.
