I had never thought twice about this until I saw it mentioned on a different thread. But now that I look, I''ve noticed that on the pavilion-side clarity plots of various GIA reports for pear shapes, I''ve seen at least three different faceting styles.

Can someone comment about whether this indicates that there are distinctly different ways to facet a pear''s pavilion, why the cutter would choose one style over another, and what the implications on the stones''s appearance might be?

Hi Elmo,

Look at some of the marquise plots. There are at least 8 different ways to cut the marquise depending on the number of mains and how you want to do the tips.

I don't know if there has been a study on how each variation effects the outcome. I would assume that each cutter has his favorite way of doing each shape.

It sounds like a study for our Russian friends.

Great question, Elmo. One I have also wondered about since I have a pear. Mine has 7 main facets, but I think they can have 8, 6, or 4 also. Since I have not had the opportunity to examine several different pavilion cuts at the same time, I don't know if there will be a significant difference in the overall appearance of a diamond. Would a diamond with a higher number of pavilion facets be more brilliant?

Elmo - although not all inclusive, and no pics are shown, these and some other variations are noted here - http://www.diamondexpert.com/articles/fancy.html

Does anyone know where to find pictures of the variations on pavillions of fancy cuts? I know radiants have several different pavillions, and some are prettier than others.

Here are some Rad and Pr variations - these are from Verena Pagel-Theisen's excellent book on diamond grading, "Diamond Grading ABC-The Manual", p. 258.

I haven't come across the other shapes yet...perhaps later...Gosh, you gotta hand it to those cutters -
