I'm beginning the preliminary search for a set of pear stones to flank my 2.5 RB. I'm noticing a big difference in sizes of pears that are the same carat weight. They're supposedly "ideal" cut, so that confuses me. Also, do you think you could help me find some that are very similar (I know me, if they're different it'll irritate me). I want to have two that are half carat each, H,I,J in color, VS2 and preferrably with some flour. Thank you!

HI athenaworth ,
I like the way you "quoted" ideal cut- because there is no accepted "ideal" cut for pear shaped diamonds.
I can totally understand your considerations.
If the side stones don't match properly, you'll always notice it.
Some people are not bothered by that, but you may be one of those that needs a more precisely matched pair.
You mention fluorescence- is your center fluorescent?

I would call a vendor and have them source sidestones for you with pears. They will be able to do this much faster and much more efficiently than we will likely be able to. And they will be able to send you pics of probably more than one set. Who is doing your setting? They might be your best resource. And be sure to tell them you are persnickity about the matching and want as good a match as possible (then list the factors that are most important to you, because not everyone has the same idea of 'good match').

Yeah, my center stone is has strong fluorescence (I always spell that wrong!). I thought about outsourcing it, but I'd kinda like to do it piecemeal if I can (I think that'll make it sting less financially).

I wouldn't do it a pear at a time unless your vendor will allow a trade in. With fancies, it is just to arbitrary. You could buy one stone and wait forever until a second match comes up later. Most 'match' fancies are paired up at the cutter, not on the fly.

If you buy one and the vendor will allow you to exchange it for a full credit toward a different at least you could buy two at a time later.

But honestly, best advice I can give you on matching fancy side stones is... open an account, save the money for the first stone. Then when you have enough for two stones, get the sourced by one vendor (who will send you pics) and buy them at the same time.

I REALLY think this is the best way. If you were doing rounds, I wouldn't give this advice. But with Ovals and Pears... too much variation between stones. wouldn't do it piecemeal. If the worry is the financial sting, but the money aside until you can do it all at once. Sorry I know it isn't as fun. But you will save yourself a lot of aggravation.

It will be harder to find the pears piecemeal than say, rounds. Some pears are short and fat, and others are sort of more long and skinny. I had a problem when creating my 3-stone where a vendor called in a pair of pears that did NOT match. They were a 'matched pair' but were not selected by the vendor-they were just ordered in. Anyway, I switched vendors and suggest you use a reliable trusted vendor to get you pears that will actually match!

There are several diamond houses which specialize in pairing up stones and making larger sets of matching stones. They offer their inventory to dealers primarily, but there is no shortage of selection. Don't buy one at a time, but find a seller who will get you a few pairs to select from. They come in all shapes and matching is one of the primary goals, but not the only goal. You will see many differing outlines and you'll have to select the one which fits your taste and ring design the best. Shallow ones will look large for their weight, but easily get less brilliant when they get a bit dirty on their pavilions. You'll have to clean them more often than somewhat deeper stones although it is not a major problem. Diamonds are all best when kept very clean, anyway. Long shapes can be angled steepr to shorten how much space they take up across the finger. Short ones can be set in a flatter configuration since they take up less room across. Color within 1 tolerance won't generally be visible between most stones, but look how the color is seen face-up in each diamond because sometimes a stone will intensify its color in a zone and another one won't do it quite the same way making two diamonds of the same color look like they don't match well.
