When having a piece made for you, when do you usually pay the balance?

Since I always select my own stones and bring them in to have a piece custom-designed to suit them (and me!), I never pay until it is completed. Realistically, the artists that do my jewelry designs know me and know I'm coming back for it. Should I ever be asked for a deposit, though, I'd be happy to pay up to half of it, up front.

The only custom work I've ever had done was through DanielM, and I paid the balance of the projects after receiving pictures of the finished pieces in the Etsy listings.

I have always made a deposit, although sometimes the fact that they have my stone is enough of a deposit for them. Then I pay the balance when I have finished pictures, multiple angles, of the finished project. I have sent pieces back for tweaking after the fact, and the jeweler has always been quite accommodating.

Ditto this.

I'd be interested to hear what different vendors have asked you to do for payment.

I didn't pay a dime for my upgrade until I had the finished ring on my hand. We were working with the same jeweler who made my original e-ring, which I traded in for the upgrade. He let me wear the original ring right up until the day I got my upgrade, and we didn't pay him the difference until that same day, too. I suppose my original ring could have served as a deposit in place of money, but I'm glad he didn't want it until we made the "trade". I would have been sad to be sans-ring for a while.
