I am considering getting a cel phone (would be my 1st) I would use it sporadically so just need a cheap one that I could pay as I go. Would need to have great reception and be able to work in Canada and USA.Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

My first cell was a Trac Phone....It worked when I needed it to....

It is not for everyday use though.....If you are going to be working in a specific area than you might be able to get a phone from your local carrier with reception in your area for a pay as you go...

Verizon has some as well as AT&T and AllTell if you have one close to you.....

Thanks Alexis:AT&T is an option for me.Need to check it out. I hear the term " unlocked cel phones" and have no clue what it means?

unlocked cell phones are just phones that have been "unlocked" to use with any carrier....certain phones can only be used with the carriers that sell them. They get the codes to delete the firewalls on them so that they can use them with other carriers. They are not prepaid phones that you are thinking of.

Thanks Alexis for explaining this to me.

No problem....I get confused over stuff all the time....

I have blonde highlights....But I am NOT a blonde...I swear!!

Just FYI, AT&T''s minutes expire very quickly if you only buy a few $ worth at a time, so make sure you read the fine print before purchasing.

My son uses a Trac Phone because he doesn''t need to use it often. It works great and the phones cost almost nothing. He bought one with the double minutes for the life of the phone, so that makes all the minutes half price. With an 400 minute card, you have 800 minutes and up to a year of service.

I hear you Alexis. It all gets confusing sometimes.

Thanks neatfreak: you are absolutely right about that.I looked some up on the internet and it seems exactly as you said. Also if I want it to work in Canada and USA it gets more difficult.I also need good reception very important.I know that some charge less per minute but you can''t get reception so the call lasts longer as a result.I really want good reception.

Thanks Diamondseeker2006: I am not sure if I can get Trac phone in Canada??? the rest sounds great. Is the reception decent? I would also not use it too often.

Scarletta: Thanks for posting this question -- I'm following with great interest.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only cel phone newbie here!

you might want to look into virgin mobile as well....but you are going to want to look into charges for minutes once you are over the boarder. Sometimes they will take double your minutes and cost you twice as much.

take a look at this link....this might help you out.
