    Hello!

My partner and I have just purchased a 1.6 carat diamond and I would love some help in determining how thick the pave band should be.

We are totally clueless on the size of melees and band thickness so any information or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I have attached some images of the setting we had in mind in terms of proportion.
We would love something with delicate claw prongs and a dainty band, set in platinum.

We are custom designing the ring with BGD, it would be really great if we could advise their design team on the thickness of the band. We've gone into bricks and mortar stores but it hasn't been easy finding the right thickness with a similar carat size.

    Thank you very much!

Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable with anything thinner than a 2mm band for everyday wear - I think that still gives a pretty delicate look, whilst being reasonably durable. Plus if you go too thin, a rock of that size tends to cause the ring to slide to the sides quite a bit.

The one on my Jocelyn from Victor Canera was just shy of 2mm, maybe 1.9mm? He does not recommend thinner. I would be conservative and stay right around 2. And I don't know about your finger. If you have larger knuckles, the ring will need to be big enough to get past your knuckles, which means it may spin. The thinner the shank, the more easily it spins. That's my experience anyhow.

Just commented on a thread talking about thin bands. I have a 2.2mm band, which I thought was really thin, apparently there are thinner. I wear it daily to work (I'm a desk jockey so that doesn't count :lol-2:) but I also wear it to the gym and horseback riding. No issues in the 3 years I've had it.

    Hope that helps!

I wouldn't go smaller than 2mm - adding pave diamonds will weaken the band too. Maybe ask them to send you some images of a completed classic half round with a stone of around your size - that has a 2mm band. Though yours will have diamonds, it will give you an idea of proportions of a 2mm band with your stone.

Here are a couple of images of a pave band on James Allen which is 1.9mm with a 1.5 carat stone. Not the exact same but hopefully helps a bit.

And the model hand photo which gives you an idea of the band size on a finger.

Thank you everyone for all your recommendations.
I was inclined to go with 1.7-1.8mm after going through various threads on PS but it seems the general consensus is to stay around 2mm.

My ring finger is a size 7 so I guess going to thin wouldn't look very balanced either!

CVB Inspired Design did mine and Caysie wouldn't do less than 2mm.

My ring size is a hair over size 7

Here is my split shank pave 2mm band on about a size 7.15 finger... each shank is 2mm

Excuse my hands-- desperately need a manicure and paraffin wax!!

ETA: my asscher is a 1.52 but they face up smaller than a similar MRB.

I contacted LB regarding the same setting a few months back. Just looked for the email but I can't seem to find it. I know for sure the setting is less then 2m, pretty sure it was a 1.8. IDJewerly also starting making the same setting very pretty but like you I ended up ordering directly from BGD. (Diamond and custom setting). Didn't go with a direct copy of the LB setting but im still very happy with it. Just have to pop the question.

    Hi FujiFuji,

Did you end up with a donut under the prongs? I'm really trying to avoid the donut so that the wedding band can sit flush against the engagement ring but BGD have said it can't be done with a 6 prong setting! Please let me know how yours turned out in terms of the donut!

    Thank you!

Thank you whitewave! Your ring is absolutely stunning and so great to see a 2mm on a size 7! That really helps!

I actually prefer a doughnut! Then the two rings rub together less and scratch less! It appears sturdier, too, if you look at the picture above. I think if you looked at most of the rings posted here, the majority will have the little doughnut! But you can certainly have it made the other way. That said, I don't see a 6 prong head that I like that BG makes, so be sure they can make one you like.

I would not consider under 2mm for an engagement ring shank, but especially not pave.

Thank you diamondseeker2006! Do you have a ring with a donut? If so, do you notice much of a gap?
    I agree, I couldn't find a suitable BG 6 prong head!

Yes, I have a 6 prong Vatche U-113 Tiffany repro setting that has a very tiny doughnut. Here's a picture showing how they usually look. The gap is very small.

The setting i ended up with does have the donut and i didnt even think of it not sitting flush. Hope I made the right choice and she likes it. I'll find out soon enough as Oct 11th might be the day I pop the question.

All the best FujiFuji!!! I'd love to see the ring once you've popped the question! I'm sure it looks stunning! If you don't mind me asking, what size was your center stone and what band thickness did you go with? Did you decide on the thickness or let the BG team work out what would be most balanced?

    Thank you

From my understanding BGD recommends not going any thinner then 2mm. I didn't do a complete custom setting just added to the half round setting and changed the crown a bit. I'm sure they would go with whatever size you want though as you're the one paying. The photo is a zoomed in but it really isn't that thick in person imo considering the size of the stone. Hope this helps Screenshot_20170918-212140.png

For a size 7 finger, I would recommend a shank no thinner than 2 mm.
