Partial modification?

I have a marquise diamond ring that my DH designed over 20 years ago! While i do love the ring, quite honestly i have never Been a marquise fan (don’t shoot me for saying that). DH loves the ring and is totally against a remake! So, here is my question. Do you think it would be possible to remake the upper portion (since the marquise is only held by 2 chevron prongs) to make it more updated or should I leave it as is (sitting lonely in my safe)?

I think an unworn ring is so sad. So, I'm in favor of a re-make, but if this shank can be reused is a function of what you want to do with the ring. Also, depending on the changes desired, it may actually have a better structural outcome to have a new ring cast that replicates the shank you want to keep -- but is cast as one piece with a new head area. If you simply want to remove the heavy prongs on the marquise and have them more delicate -- that would be do-able. So, what do you have in mind?

I'm not really sure. The marquise looks "out of place" and "too dated" too me. Not sure how to explain it. Maybe it's that the ring is substantial and the marquise kind of gets lost???? Possibly bezeling the marquise and adding some engraving???? idk Unfortunately, DH is not willing to have a remake since this was his design!!!

How many mm is the stone?
Maybe a reset into a 2mm knife egde solitaire setting would help? The wider the band, the smaller a stone looks for many people.

I suspect the setting is not going to be versatile for a different stone shape but you can always ask a local jeweler.

Marquise is 1.33ct 11.09x5.80x3.78 H , SI1

DH will have no part of that! He loves the ring as it is......although I only wear it occasionally.

Aww I hate seeing a ring that is unloved and unworn...wish your dh could set aside his thoughts on this and allow you to do what you need to do to start loving and wearing this ring again.

I agree with the others that making the band thinner would make the marquise pop more. It's a lovely ring but I totally get what you are saying. There is no right or wrong of course and it comes down to personal taste.

If you explain you want to love and adore and wear the ring but it just needs to be tweaked a bit more to what you envision wearing? Maybe he would be OK with it then?

Why don't you sit him down and gently and lovingly explain that the ring is unworn and not adored by you but if he could help you redesign the setting you think it could become a ring that you love wearing more often.

I think you have to find a way to blend the curve of the marquise with the very linear setting he designed. What about a wider bezel (think a metal halo) around the marquise and replicate some of the engraving from the shank? This will both give you a chance to join the two elements and to make the marquise bigger looking to balance the setting.

Heres the idea, but make it marquise shaped, but still with "edges" in the halo. So, it will likely be hexagon shaped. You could also do a prong in bezel if full bezel does not suit.

I was wondering if the setting could be modified to hold a smaller round so the whole thing is more of a "band" ring than a setting for a bigger stone.
You might get more wear out of it as a band. The marquise could then be put in an E/W ring to give it an updated look. However, if your DH doesnt
want you to change it then I dont think you can do anything with it.

Is DH invested in the baguette shoulders or more the shank below that? If the baguettes can be revised, that might allow you some more design flexibility to lower the halo and integrated it into the shank.

At this point he only agreed to let me revise the marquise ONLY!!! I have talked to him for months about this......and I always get the same answer!!! I tried to explain that I really want to love the ring and wear it, and a reset of the center stone to a more delicate setting would be Awesome!!! NOPE! He won't budge!

It seems to me that your DH is clearly attached to his design. I find it a bit odd that he doesn’t care whether you like it and want to wear it or not. But since he doesn’t and is resisting any changes you want to make, I think maybe you should let this one go. It seems to matter more to him than to you. Maybe he should wear it, haha (so sorry, I could not stop myself from the joke). It would be different if he was motivated to make the ring into something you like, but he isn’t. If it was me getting that kind of resistance, I would just continue to not wear the ring. Can’t win them all!

I LOVE this design for a marquise and it is one of my absolute favorites.

I really like @tyty333 ‘s suggestion to see if it would be possible to modify the existing setting to accommodate a different shape stone that blends into your existing setting more to make it more like a band. That way your husbands design isn’t messed with.

With the removed marquise you could have DK make you the setting above! Two rings! Win win!

Marquise aside, do you like the design and would you wear it if it has an Asscher or step-cut? I'm getting the feeling you just don't like this ring that much and even a re-make might not make you want to wear it more...Maybe I'm wrong....

Surely your husband would rather see you wearing either the ring or the stone, not just packing it away in the safe. Can you make a new ring with the marquise?

I like the idea of making it into a band and use the diamond to make a new ring. You can wear both at the same time, one on each finger.

Hmmm... what about removing the head and baguettes then splitting the shank to "lighten" the thick shank up a bit. Might be able to keep the engraving? Replace head with something more delicate?
