LONDON (AP) — An attacker stabbed a police officer and was shot by police on the grounds outside Britain's Parliament, sending the compound into lockdown Wednesday. Around the same time, a vehicle mowed down pedestrians on nearby Westminster Bridge. Authorities said they were treating the attack as a "terrorist incident until we know otherwise."

Thoughts & prayers for safety to our British friends across the pond.

I have been reading about this on-line. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and, indeed, all Britons.

Think of what this attack could have been, had the guy been armed with the kind of semi- and automatic guns anybody can have here in the US.

Because Joe Public 'needs' a military quality machine gun.

'Joe Public' cannot legally own an automatic firearm in the U.S. except in very few, unique and expensive circumstances, and they are usually historic collectors; not terrorists.

Not to sound condescending, but do you know what 'semi-auto' means when it comes to firearms?

Terrorists manage to get bombs and rifles into places where they should, by rights, not have them. Therefore, bloodshed can happen in places where it "should" not happen. I am not a gun enthusiast, but it does not seem logical to me to argue that there would be no bloodshed at the site of a terrorist incident in a country which bans citizens handling weapons if terrorists have biochemical weapons or field nuclear devices!

And look what terrorists can do even with legally-permissible things ... like cars & knives.

I'm not sure what guns has to do with this incident or why it was brought up really. Someone with hate in their heart is always going to find a way to spew it without regard to any law.

Have you forgotten what they can do with jet airliners?

Guns make it easier to kill more people, and do it more quickly.

Bigger guns even more so.

So do bombs ... and as Bonfire noted, airplanes ... NONE of which were used in today's terror attack in London; it was a car and a knife.

Again - regardless of the 'tool' used, if someone wants to commit terror or has hate in their heart, they will find the means and method to do so.

Guns make it easier to kill more people, and do it more quickly.

Bigger guns even more so.

And explosive devices even more so.

I was typing as you were posting Jenn...I'm slow to figure out this new quoting format.

And this is a very false statement. :naughty: The size of a firearm/gun has nothing to do with how much 'easier' or 'quicker' it is to kill people.

You have a nice day.

I find you guys SO infuriating when you go off topic so quickly & start arguing who's right, who's wrong, and who should or should not have guns. The fact is that right now, here in the U.K., four people are dead (one being the terrorist - hooray for that) and many others are in a critical condition.

Respect the situation. It doesn't matter HOW this happened. It has happened, end of. Some people are not going home tonight. Go & hug your family & stop all the arsehole gun chanting.

My heart goes out to the people of the UK.

It is very heartbreaking. I agree with Alex, now is not the time to further any political agenda for either side. Now is a time to let a country sort itself out.

My heart goes out to the brave, beleaguered members of the emergency services who bravely put their lives on the line every day to keep others safe, and they don't even get very well-paid for it, in most cases. Somewhere there is a family, maybe a husband or wife, and children, who have heard the news they always dreaded and knew they were at heightened chance of receiving, because their loved one was a police officer. Now their worst fears have come true. Can you imagine how they feel tonight? It's just so unfair.

Of course, I am just as sorry for the other people who died as well. I just have a soft spot for emergency personnel. I say a silent prayer every time I see a fire truck race out. They not only risk their lives in the course of a day's work, but their hours are a nightmare, which causes health and relationship strain, and police, especially, have to take a lot of abuse. I just think society in general takes their sacrifices for granted. And then we have sports stars who are paid a fortune for kicking a ball around. I've always been of the opinion that emergency personnel should be paid on a par with doctors, and now another police officer has died while helping to keep society safe, which they didn't have to do - could have got a safe, warm job in real estate or something - and it just breaks my heart.

My thoughts are also with the other families of people who were killed, and I spare a thought for the killer's family since often they are not involved and are in complete shock that their relative could do such a thing.

There you go talking common sense again Kenny.

Guns absolutely make it easier to kill more people quickly.

This tragic attack has nothing to do with guns so why are all of you bringing it up?

My heart goes out to those killed and injured by this disgusting act.

Just saw on the news that there are now 5 people dead and about 40 wounded.

My heart sank as the news broke.
An attack on London was a matter of when and not if, as I did not expect 7/7 in 2005 was just an one-off.
Be vigilant and be safe, and that much is true for anywhere nowadays IMHO.

Someone should have muzzled Donald Trump, Jr. Did you see what he wrote to the Mayor of London during the event? And he refused to apologize when it was explained to him that he had misunderstood the mayor's statement. Like father, like son, I guess.

I have to say, London is calm and running relatively smoothly. My heart goes out to everyone caught up in this unspeakable act. In contrast to DJ junior, these are tweets from Brendan Cox, whose wife Jo, was a young MP who was murdered a year ago, outside her office, by a right wing extremist.

I don't care about the name of the attacker. This is the name I will remember.

Whoever has attacked our parliament for whatever motive will not succeed in dividing us. All of my thoughts with those injured.

I'm tired of the Trump children acting as though we voted them in office. His tweet was not helpful and completely out of line. You stated if perfectly Deb "like father, like son". He us another Trump who is missing a sensitivity chip.

It was heartbreaking to hear about this.
My thoughts and prayers to all those affected.
I'm grieving with you, here in Canada.

The same thing happened after the shooting in quebec. The trump team started running their mouths (fingers?) with misinformation. It's disgusting.

You mean like all the haters here.

Your hatred of Trump is getting very old and tiresome.

But what is really disgusting is that this thread should be about mourning what happened in Great Britain not more of your transparent agenda.

This is what was said in the Twitter link.

Sadiq Khan has said he believes the threat of terror attacks are “part and parcel of living in a big city” and encouraged Londoners to be vigilant to combat dangers.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...es-new-york-bombing-a7322846.html#commentsDiv

I am not sure how prepared you can be walking along a street and getting purposely hit by a car. Unless you just don't go anywhere.
The quote* wasn't to individual citizens. If you even bothered to read the article, instead of scanning the headline, you would see that it says that CITIES and CAPITOLS should be prepared for the threat of terror attacks.
"“That means being vigilant, having a police force that is in touch with communities, it means the security services being ready, but it also means exchanging ideas and best practice”, Mr Khan told the Evening Standard shortly before a meeting with New York mayor Bill de Blasio."
