Hi Folks,

I urgently need some advice here. I bought a diamond from Blue nile about 6 weeks ago or so for $17,000. We got it appraised by HArold weinstein who is well respected, and it came back perfect.

Today i was looking at it again and i noticed what looks like a flat line 3 quarters of the way down the diamond. It looks like a crack paralell to the crown that cuts right though the diamond. It is the same regardless of what angle I look from.
Below the crack the diamond appears to be like a broken windsheild inside. It as if the crack is actually the line between this shattered secton and the rest of the diamond. I connot be sure if the bit that loks shattered is actually like that as it is so small at the bottom, but the line is certainly obviuos to the naked eye.

IS this possible to happen? Surely a diamond cannot break inside? Any advice please??

Also at 6 weeks we are past the 1 month return date from blue nile, should they still change it in this situation?

Thanks for any help here!!

Conor

Hi Conors,
could it be a girdle reflection?

Hi Conors,

I remember my first experience with girdle reflections. I think that is almost certainly it. here is the above link again:

The Above link

I found a really great set of pictures that looked exactly like mine when I first got scared. I am trying to find them for you, but I am having some trouble relocating it.

I had gone through the same fear you are...it was about three weeks after I just received the stone...and I knew it just happened. Turned out to the girdle reflection as whymeworry suggested,

To help define it...mine actually looked milky and ragged and streaked across just as you are describing. I have no idea why I didn''t see it before.

Don''t panic just yet. Take it in to a pro tomorrow. Please post an update...don''t leave us hanging.

ahhh, I can't find it, it is the perfect 3 diamonds set side by side on their culets and the girdle reflections are very clear. Here is one of a diamond where it is fiarly visible, but not like I am really trying to find:

A semi-good picture of it

Here we go, this has got some really nice picture of it, in addition to the ones listed above already:

One of the threads that eased my mind

Non of the above are really perfect, there is one out there somewhere though that is, but I think they probably do a good enough job.

HEre a few pictures, Sorry i couldnt get more detail.. Thanks for your help

I am feeling a little better now and hoping it is a reflection!

yeah it looks like a girdle reflection to me as well....

Absolutely a girdle reflection!!! Please don''t worry and enjoy your diamond! Great pic example of girdle reflection too, good job!

hey, yea that is def a girdle reflection. I wish I could find those pictures I was looking for as the ones posted above really fail to capture just how clear and present the girdle reflection really is--as you are seeing.

very nice picture by the way, and don't worry, you will grow accustomed to it I think.

Here''s another pic of one.

Hi All,

Thanks for your comments on this. After a nights sleep i have come to the conclusion that a very common girdle reflection is a much more likely possibility than the very uncommon chance of the diamond cracking at that exact point!!

I am just amazed that with the constant examination both myslef and the missus have given this diamond its hard to believe that we could have missed someting so obvious for so long.

The missus is near tears at the moment, and i really should have checked here before pointing out this effect to her, so i think i will bring here down to birks today so that they can confirm it to her face. Otherwise i just know that she will probably believe but spend the rest of her life wondering every time she looks at it!

By the way, we got this stone after popping the measurements into the Garry Holiways calculator and it came back with great numbers. (1.2) On reciept we went straight down to tiffanys to look under thier lights and i swear its as good if not better than anything they have on sale. ive looked at a lot of diamonds recently and this is beautiful.

SO .. Online really is the way to go, and thanks to all the people who posted here.. You made it possible.

Thanks.

Conor

Glad to see it was nothing.

However...if you can''t afford to replace that lovely stone...get that ring INSURED. That way nobody''s blood pressure has to suffer, no matter what you end up noticing next.
