I'm new to this forum and was hoping that I may be able to get a little advice from the community...

I've been searching for an oval diamond as the centerpiece of an engagement ring for about a month and haven't found anything that I have fallen in love with yet. One of the jewlers I am working with brought the following ring to my attention. It is priced very well compared to similar stones I have seen on various web dealers as well as other stones brick and mortar stores have shown me.

Its details are:

2.03ct GIA certified G color VVS1 measuring 9.24 x 7.06 x 4.66 (ratio 1.31)
Polish - excellent
Symmetry - good
Fluorescence - medium blue

My questions on this particular stone are:
- Is the medium blue fluorescence something to worry about? I recently read a GIA report that said it had minimal effect on a stone's color and appearance in normal, everyday conditions. However, I know that no fluorescence would obviously be ideal and wonder how the medium rating might affect the stone.

- I know the 'ideal' ratio for an oval is around 1.5. Any thoughts of this one being 1.31 and a little more round? I tend to like the rounder shape over the longer ovals, but I figured I'd see what others thought.

I have also been offered the following stone for slightly less money and thought I'd see if you had any thoughts on this one as well:

2.03ct GIA certified G color VS1 measuring 11.32 x 6.97 x 3.85 (ratio 1.62)
Polish - Very Good
Symmetry - Good
Fluorescence - None

In my mind this ring seems to be pushing the boundaries of being too long and is also significantly shallower that the initial stone described above. It does not have any fluorescence, however. There is some savings to be had here, but I wonder if the above stone is really the better deal.

Sorry for the long essay! Any and all insights you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Med fluor usually lowers the price. It is unlikely to have any disadvantages.
Many people like fatter ovals. You should really pick the more attractive one of the two. If you need a better price, lower the clarity requirements.

Julie's right ... it really does come down to what looks best to your eye. I couldn't tell from your post, but have you seen these in person? If not, can the seller send you videos of the stones so you can see how they perform in different lighting conditions?

Since you've asked for input, for me personally, the dimensions of both stones would cause me to hesitate and keep looking further (if I didn't have any time constraints). The first stone is a little too round for me and the second is a little too long (although, there are alot of oval lovers who prefer the rounder shape). I'd also continue looking to see if I could get a better deal by lowering the clarity (as Julie pointed out).
