Hi everyone!

Just joined and this is my first post.

Just wanted opinions on what you would get in this situation. I know the decision is ultimately mine, but I keep going back and forth on what I want.

Here''s the situation: my grandparents recently died and my mom and aunt are selling their house. My mom wants to give me $1,000 from the house closing to buy something I want to be a reminder of my grandparents (I know $1,000 isn''t much but they had a very modest house). I want to spend the money on a diamond, most likely to put in a solitaire setting.

I actually already have two diamonds - a 0.38ct round that is my original e-ring. The diamond was my husband''s great-grandfather''s. I also have a 1.5ct round (that faces up like a 1.25ct because it is very deep) that was my MIL''s e-ring when she was married to my husband''s dad (she has since remarried). I don''t feel as though either diamond is really "mine", thus I want one of my own.

I love the sparkle of rounds however since I technically already have two I am leaning toward a fancy shape. My two favorite fancies are the pear and oval. But then I keep going back to the idea of having an ideal cut round.

I can''t seem to decide. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Best thing to do would be to go out and look at all three side by side to see which one really "sings" to you. The choice is ultimately yours. You will find that RBs are the most popular.

I personally like fancy shapes because I think they are more "artistic" and unique. I had a 2.05 D-VS2 Oval, but now have a 3.01 F-SI1 Pear. Even though the oval was a better quality stone, I like the pear more. Just my opinion.

My girlfriend has an oval (she is also a musician).

I never liked the concept of an oval until I was one in person. I recently saw a 3 stone oval ring and it knocked my socks off.

Have you considered another round about .38, and making all 3 stones into a 3 stone ring? That would be SO NICE!

GET A PEAR BABY!! But of course I'm not at all biased!

I''m not all that fond of pears, I admit, but I also think they need to be bigger. Thus, for that amount of money I''d choose a small RB that matches your original e-ring so you can assemble a 3 stone, or get an oval.

A third round diamond for a 3 stone ring will work well but keep in mind that pears and ovals of the same size will be less expensive. I think you can get a decent sized pear for $1000. The one in my avatar is .54 G SI1 and was around $1100.

Hmmm...the three stone ring is probably the best option actually. At one point a while ago I considered it and went to a jeweler but he said that it would be hard to match the 0.38ct diamond because it''s more of a "transitional" cut as opposed to a "true" round cut. Now that I think about it, maybe he was giving me a bunch of hooey because he didn''t want to take the time to find another diamond like it.

I really don''t "need" another diamond ring, meaning a fancy cut. As it is now I rotate wearing the bigger one and the smaller one (they are both in solitaire settings). I like the idea of just having one ring!

I think you have convinced me the three stone is the best way to go!

The "Old European" and transitional cuts look a tad different... the pictue below isn't the greatest, but it might help. It may be a bit tricky to find a match, but there are enough diamonds out there to allow some hope, I would think.
There is allot of variation in these old cuts (as if there wouldn't among the modern

) so you might need to leave the existing stone with a jeweler to match it for size and looks. There are a few dozen "old european" listed in Pricescope's database right now: all larger than half a carat and most listed by Dirt Cheap.

You might want to ask them for a matching stone, I guess.
