Hello,
Like I am sure lots of visitors to this site, I am new to the world of diamonds and making my way along quite a steep learning curve.
I've been looking at rings with my girlfriend and we are getting quite a firm idea of what she likes (an oval shaped diamond of about 1.48 l/w, about 7.5 in length, down to SI1 in clarity, G in colour, and excellent cut (with an eye on the parameters for oval diamonds set out on this website) set in a platinum band with a tapered pave setting). We've actually seen an ideal setting which is made by a well known online retailer with a presence in the UK, but as they have been the first to admit carry only a limited range of oval diamonds, none of which are quite what we're looking for. Conversley BlueNile have the range of diamonds but none of the setting appeal.
With a clear idea of what we want in mind, we approached a couple of local jewellers to explain what we've looking for and to enquire whether they could make something similar if we could source the stone separately from somewhere like Bluenile. They of course could, but the prices we've been quoted are perhaps not surprisingly significantly higher than the cost of buying an off the shelf ring from a large retailer.
I think we're getting to the point of accepting that we're to going to have to compromise on either setting or stone (probably stone), but the last avenue I have to explore is buying the ring direct from Rex Mining who have offered to source the stone and create the setting. I have been corresponding with someone from their in-house jeweller who has been very helpful, but I am nevertheless nervous about parting with a not insignificant amount of money to someone in a different country who I have been able to find out very little about. Has anybody on here had any experience with dealing with this company direct?
Thanks in advance,
Ian
