I am looking for an engagement ring. I really have no clue what I am doing (even though I have spent hours researching). My girlfriend wears a 6.25 ring size and has long, skinny fingers. She wants an oval diamond and the band to be white gold/platinum and plain/round cathedral/solitaire. I found this one on ebay:

What do you think?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

What is your budget? that one may not be eye-clean, no way to tell, also that is a stock photo and not an actual photo of the ring you would get. Also not GIA or AGS certified, so I would pass.

$1,500

Thanks!

JA also has some other solitaire settings

here are some options, ask for an ASET image then post, JA will let you request up to 3. maybe tyty or someone who is better at ovals can chime in

J color but looks like it could be nice, also has strong blue fluor so ask about if that has negative impact on appearance

I am not wild abput ebay unless you are an experienced diamond shopper. Would you like us to help you find something where you can be more sure that you get what you pay for?

The details on the ring from ebay also states that it is SI2 (enhanced). Makes me wonder what the real clarity is on this stone. Also, the appraisals they give are usually not worth the paper they're written on. As the other have stated, I'd stay with GIA or AGS.

Dreamer_D - that would be great if you could post suggestions! Thanks!

We went looking at rings the other day and she really likes that 1 - 1.2 ct ovals. Here are a couple that I found online:

Went to a local store and was offered a VS2, 1.2 ct, J-K oval for $3150 (not certified though but it is a family friend).

What do you think?

Thanks!

The diamond on ebay and the second diamond from JA are the same diamond.

You would need to call JA and ask them if this is eye-clean (the second JA). What is your new budget?

$2.5k or $3k for diamond and ring.

Is your future FI okay with a K color? It will be obviously warm, especially in an oval shape. A well-cut oval faces up large for its size, could you perhaps go a little smaller in order to get a slightly higher color? VVS2 is really unnecessary, and I think you had the right idea with the SI1-SI2s.

The J you posted earlier looks like it has a big inclusion on the table (and is on hold?). That is definitely something you'd want to ask is visible or not.

Is upgrading in the future a possibility? If so, perhaps you could go a little smaller now and save toward a future anniversary upgrade in the 1-1.2ct range. FWIW, one of my best friends has a .75 oval that looks really big. I think she may have some diamonds on the band, but still-people have literally grabbed her hand, saying "what a rock".

Not sure if this helps.;)

ETA: If you do go with the family friend, please make sure you are looking at GIA, AGS, or at the very least, EGL USA stones. We have seen many people here burned by family friends with uncertified diamonds. My own brother was offered an I VS1 by a "family friend". When he insisted it be sent to GIA, it came back as a J VS2. Still such a beautiful stone that he bought it, but he ended up paying a J VS2 price.

ETAA: some choices
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1219610.asp size
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1220001.asp med blue fluor; check if eye clean
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/D-SI1-Premium-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1289591.asp smaller, perfect color, out of budget, but with Pricescope discount, it should be close

ask if the SI1 & SI2 are eyeclean...

Also- how does your GF feel about color....? What color grades did she try on at the store? Curious since getting a 1.0 ct oval for around 2,500 will put you around I-J-K color- factoring in ideal cut stones (ideal cut stones will sparkle more, show less color and be more "impressive")

fancy cut stones tend to show more color than a RB....

To be honest this one looks like it might have a lot of light loss (IMO). You need to request an ASET image (you can request up to
3 without charge).

These 2 might be worth looking into...

HI:

Fancies are more difficult to buy without seeing the "genuine" image--people have preferences of L & W ratios. David Atlas' site has a shape "calculator" that might be worthwhile checking out once you get some dimensions of stones of interest. Have you tried on many ovals IRL?

cheers--Sharon

If I had a nickel for every post I've read that said "family friend jeweler" with an unhappy ending.
