My sweetheart and I visited him on Friday to order rings. Wow, what a nice man! Very unassuming and comfortable, generous with his time and knowledge. His studio is on the second floor of a very picturesque, rustic little spot of heaven, with great view - distant mountains and very pretty countryside. I can easily see why his designs are a bit nature themed. We hike not too far away from there, so we made a weekend of it.
He showed us many of the tools he uses and we sat where he creates all the lovely pieces he makes. We saw the teensy little wheel that he uses to add the fine millegrain detail to the bezels, and got to see trays of gold, diamonds and colored gemstones. Also, the belt buckle that is in the Smithsonian, of George Washington and the cherry tree.
Coati - was it you who suggested that he contribute here on PS? I made the suggestion too ... hope he does it. Anyway, I explained that your ring was my inspiration to have one made. Don''t worry, though - it will have a different look.
Anyway, we ended up ordering wedding bands too. SO is not into jewelry at all, and went along with all the suggestions made. Hope he likes his as much as I will. I didn''t want to know exactly when they will arrive, & want to be surprised with the proposal. But since looking at the LIW list just now and found my name at #13; (started at 130-something I think) so hope it won''t be too long. Already miss looking at the little OEC....
Also, we stopped at Ann McKay''s Studio: met her and tried on a number of rings. What a lovely woman she is, too. She worked for Jim for many years and when he decided to give up the store to be semi-retired and do only custom work, she took over. She is very creative and Jim''s influence is apparent, as her style is rather similar.
All in all, it was a great day. If you decide to go, you won''t be disappointed! - BB
