We found out today that one of our cats (a year old) needs surgery because he broke his hip. He was wincing and limping yesterday but we didn''t know what was wrong. We took him to the emergency vet clinic this morning and they x-rayed his legs. We were surprised to learn that he had broken a bone. We''ve now quarantined him in our guest room to keep him away from our other cat so neither one would be tempted to play and get riled up. He''s actually pretty doped up on medicine at the moment, so he''s pretty calm. I just feel so bad for the poor little guy.

Awww!! I hate to hear when animals are in pain. I will keep him in my prayers for a speedy recovery! That sounds really young for a broken hip! Do you guys know how it happened?

Oh, poor baby! I hope the surgery goes well and he has a quick and painless recovery.

My avatar pic is from when our little guy, Geddy, had to have emergency surgery at 10 mos old. Poor baby, he hated that e-collar, but as the evil mommy that I am I couldn''t help resist taking a picture, he looked so damn cute!

Oh no! I''m so sorry for your baby. Any idea on how he hurt his poor little hip?

No, we''re not sure how Henry hurt himself. It could have been while playing with Zoe, our other cat (who''s just a few months older than him). It could have been while jumping down from a shelf in one of our closets, or any number of things. He also likes to chase his tail on the bathtub, and he does occasionally slip and fall. Maybe it was that. Neither my FI nor I heard anything when it happened, so we''re not sure when he actually broke his hip.

The emergency vet clinic gave us a plastic collar to put in him, kind of like Geddy''s, Haven. He squirmed out of it and now he won''t let us near him to try again. He has a patch on his back that is giving medicine to him (think nicotine or bc patch). He found the gauze that''s covering the patch and he''s been trying to get it off. He does have more energy today, and he''s not as lethargic as he was before.

Thanks for the kind thoughts!

Poor little bugger, I hope the surgery goes well and he is on the road to a speedy recovery.

Awwww, poor baby! I hope his surgery goes well and he heals quickly!!!!!

Aw, sorry to hear about your kitty Zoe! I hope the surgery goes well and he makes a speedy recovery as well. Keep us posted.

Aw, Henry is such a good name. My cats are very rambunctious sometimes so I worry about them hurting themselves like poor little Henry. I know I wouldn''t know what happened if they did hurt themselves, though, because they''re always running around and jumping on and off things like little maniacs. I''m sure the surgery will go well and I''m glad he''s feeling better!

awww sending him best wishes for his op. I''m sure he''ll be fine and will recover quickly.

Thank you so much everyone! We also found out that Henry has a heart murmur and he''s going to have an ultrasound done tomorrow to see if his heart is healthy enough for surgery. If so, hopefully he''ll have surgery on Friday. He''s usually quite active, and to see him so lethargic is sad. But he''s a trooper and I know he''ll be fine after all of this is over.

Zoe I am late to this, but I am sending out head bonks and good thoughts to your baby! Please keep us updated!

Thanks for the head bonks Lorelei! I just got off the phone with the vet tech and it looks like Henry has heart valve disease. The actual heart is fine but one of the major valves isn''t too great. He''ll need to be on either one or two types of medication for a few days before he has his hip surgery. The vet tech said that hopefully he''ll be able to have surgery mid-late next week. I feel so bad because that will be just shy of two weeks since we first discovered his broken hip (this past weekend). He''ll also need to be on this medication for life, and he''s only 20 months old. The other thing -- they had to give him tow enemas today (he was wayyyy backed up). We''re having him stay at the vet''s tonight in case he has to, uh, go more. Apparently it''s not fun to clean up after, and he''s already had two baths today. I''m not up for dealing with that, so I was happy to agree to having him sleep over.

The timing of this stuff isn''t good. I''m trying to plan our wedding, which is in about 52 days, and I need day surgery next week. That might determine something that wouldn''t be good. Nonstop doctor''s appts and getting poked and prodded. Not fun. Oh yeah, and we decided to begin house hunting. And chaos at school at the end of the year is always nutty. Sorry to vent but it''s all just a bit much.

Oh Zoe, honey... I''m so sorry all of this is hitting at once. Deep breaths and a great big hug for you. I hope you get all the love and support you need right now. Hang in there!

Sorry to hear about Henry!

Aw, honey, I''m sorry. I think it''s kind of like the saying ''When it rains, it pours''! I hope things settle down for you and your kitty gets better. And good luck with your surgery.

Oh, no! Zoe, I missed all this somehow. I''m sorry about poor little Henry, I know how hard it is to have a sick kitty. I hope your own surgery goes well too.

Oh dear - poor kitty and poor you. That is a lot to deal with. Crossing fingers and sending healing vibes to you both and hoping that things improve soon!

Thank you ladies! We picked up Henry from the vet today and he''s going back in next Thursday for surgery. He''s now on 2 meds for his heart and he''ll have to take them forever. I feel silly for posting so much about cat but we don''t have kids and our cats our like our kids right now. Does that officially make me a cat lady?

Thanks for the kind thoughts and wishes!

Aw...poor guy! My sister''s cat has gotten constipated a couple of times-I had no idea how serious it can be! I''m glad they caught his heart problem now-maybe that''s the silver lining in all of this?

And no need to apologize for posting so much about Henry-my cats are my kids also so I completely understand. I always say that I love them more than I love most people! Give Henry some pets for me!
