Hello,
I thought I would share my experience that happened this past weekend. I posted late last week about "i" color in the stone my boyfriend had chosen. As a quick recap, he chose a ring at a store -(1.52, i color, SI1) -- (yes, at a mall but considered to be a high end store and he was connected there through a friend). Anyway, he chose the stone , was told it was GIA cert. but was not shown papers. Loved it. Took me to see it last Thursday, and I loved it too. We thought we had found our ring. It was already set and looked beautiful on my hand.
Fast forward to Saturday. My boyfriend got the pile of cash and took me with him because they wanted to size my finger twice (did it once on Thursday but they wanted to do another day). Anyway, they brought the ring out for us to take a peek before we sent it away to be sized, and BAM! Pow! There's black carbon right at the top of the stone!! Two carbon marks that we could see with the eye at even about 5 feet away. First Matt asked for them to please go clean it. They brought it back and Bam! It's still there! (one was larger than the other -- and who *knows* what was under the prongs!)
Then I say, this is an SI1?? They say yes, the owner comes over and I recite what my understanding is of the clarity grade SI1. Owner looks at it and says she "can't see it, but that she has 52 year old eyes". What? An owner of a high end jewelry store doesn't SEE that? Then she slinks away and doesn't come back by us again... kind of leaves her sales person hanging out to dry.
Then I say, this is GIA certified right?? She says -- I believe so... let me go double check. Comes back and says, "oh no, sorry -- that one is not GIA certified." I ask if it's certified by anyone? She says no -- but they could definitely send it away to get certified. (well, DUH).
Needless to say, we walked away. But boy did the whole thing just leave us with such a negative feeling. My BF was completely nauseous. And I was just so sad! But in the end, if the clarity was wrong, I trusted NOTHING else about the stone. We learned a lot, and it's kind of funny how when one door closes, another opens.
A co-worker of mine has a husband who is a wholesaler. They opened up their office to us yesterday (Sunday) and showed us 8 stones right in our price range and right in our budget. What a breath of fresh air! All certified, all beautiful. We got a GIA certified F color, 1.50, SI1 for the same amount we almost spent on the bogus deal. It is absolutely beautiful and is being sized and set today!
Just thought I'd share my experience. I'm so glad I found this website, wish I had sooner!
