I finally got around to setting my opposed bar tourmaline and faceted ethiopian opal.

I didn't set the tourmaline for a long time because I couldn't really see it in a ring that I would wear...but I thought it was too small to be a pendant. But then I got a 4mm faceted ethiopian opal, it is beautifully translucent, with mesmerizing flashes of colors, especially blue and greens. It has a kind of magic that just goes perfectly with the moving pixelation of the tourmaline. So I sent both off to Daniel M to put in a simple sterling silver setting.

And here are his pics! I won't receive the real deal until 2 weeks or so since it will be shipped along with my star sapphire ring when it's finished.

The tourmaline is 1.52ct, 9x5. The opal is 4mm (forgot the ct weight, sorry!)
Here are pics of the loose stones first

Here are Dan's photos. The tourmaline looks a bit dark in them, but in real life, it's quite a bright and lively stone!

I will post more when I receive it :)

Very Nice!

The two compliment each other well and the simplicity of the setting highlights them even more. :appl:

It's beautiful and modern looking, good combination!

Beautiful. Love the two stones together.

Thanks Empress, Lovinggems, and Flygirl!

I thought about using a diamond as an accent, but that just didn't seem to fit as well. I like that both of these stones are a bit unique and a have a unique sparkle factor.

I'm super excited to get it, so sad about the wait, lol.

The colors came out really nice!

Very, very pretty! :appl: The tourmaline and opal look great together , and the setting really shows both of them off.

Oh, How Gorgeous!!!!!

Such beautiful stones, and I love clean, simple settings!

i like it! congrats!

Such an adorable beauty!

What an inventive combination! It looks great now, and I'm sure it's even more wonderful in real life with all the play that your opal surely gets. Looking forward to seeing your picts when it arrives!

Very nice combo. I have an elongated tourmaline and an ethopian faceted round opal, so this gives me some ideas!

That's so pretty. I love the combination and REALLY like the Opal. When you get it, will you put it on a silver chain and do a few neckline shots? I'd love to see it with a sparkly silver chain? :lickout:

No problem LD! Haha, I actually had the option of getting it with a silver chain, but I figured the black rubber cord would be a bit "edgier" and in keeping with the pixelation. That, and I have so many silver chains already!

This combo can't get any better; the edgy opposed bar design with the opal and black cord speaks of simplicity, uniqueness and contemporary all in one.

Gosh I adore that tourmaline - remember you posting it ages ago and have wanted one every since. Do you mind sharing where you originally got it?

I think you and I have very similar tastes... I think, I want a pixely tourm... you HAVE a pixely tourm! I think, I want a cloudy iridescent facety stone... you HAVE a cloudy iridescent faceted opal! I obsess over that dang star sapphire, you BUY it! So I guess I should say, you have EXCELLENT taste, and I'm very happy to be able to live vicariously through you as gemmies really aren't in the PhD student budget!

That combo looks great! And definitely can't wait to see the star sapphire set!

I'm right there with you velouriaL!

I hope when I go to intergem at the end of the month I can find a opal just like that. I love the combination, it's really cool.

Also, does anyone ever see these gorgeous one of a kind pieces and think "One of these days, I'll see someone wearing this in an elevator and I'm going to really creep them out by saying "Oh! You must be MakingTheGrade/Kismet/Tourmaline_Lover, I'm mostly a lurker on the pricescope!""??

That's just beautiful! Please post neck shots when you get it.

I love how those 2 stones look together. One of these days I think I need to get me an opposed bar cut tourmaline too.

Chrono: Thanks for the lovely compliment, I'm so glad you like it since I'm such a fan of your jewelery and you have impeccable taste!

TL: Hehe, I'm happy to be giving you ideas! I try my best to be a good enabler!

HotPozzum: I bought the tourmaline from a private seller, sorry. But Gene (precisiongem.com) cuts this design very well if you're interested, and his prices are very competitive

velouriaL: I guess we really do have similar tastes! I'm very excited to see the star sapphire myself, hopefully I'll be getting photos in the next week, and the ring itself in the next 2 week. You can expect a flood of photos, although I still haven't figured out to photograph the star properly...

maebelle : I'm so jealous you get to go to Intergem! I hope you come back with lots of photos! Hehe, for one of the Philly get togethers, I told the other girls I'd be the one with the JKT spinel pendant that I had just finished, they were totally able to ID me based on that!

BoulderGal : I will definitely try to take some decent neckshots when I get the pendant

Kismet: I love how the two look together too. It was actually accidental that I even though of it, I was going through and rearranging my things and just happened to put those two next to each other, and had a sudden "Aha!" moment.

Not to mention that resale leon three stone I know we've both been eyeballing! Once again, you have my blessing, as there's no way I can come close to swinging it, even though it's amazing deal!

Maebelle, someone on totally different, unrelated forum recognized me by my Barry tourmaline ring in a shot where I was holding something up! Definitely excited for that to happen in person, although I rarely wear it...

speaking of the star sapphire....here are some teaser shots :)

What a beautiful combo! My birthstone is opal and I can never find jewelry that I like with it but that really looks fantastic :naughty:

Rose gold and a light blue go so well together; it looks like your ring is holding some water in it. So simple, so beautiful.

Thanks Chrono. I have a little bit of concern over the workmanship, it's not as smooth and delicate as I was hoping for, although part of that might just be the nature of the stone.

Here's another pic from Dan.

I am really loving that pendant. What a great combination, and the black cord is a perfect touch.

I have not dealt with Dan so I cannot speak for the actual workmanship but I do not find it to be particularly fine in a few pictures on his website. Then again, it’s incredibly difficult to create an even bezel.
